Here's your Christmas present from Matt Damon and George Clooney: the trailer for The Monuments Men, which teams them up in WWII as men who want to save the art in Europe from being destroyed by the Nazis. Based on a true story, Clooney's character, George Stout, is the mastermind who recruits a team of eight (including John Goodman, Bill Murray, Jean Dujardin, and Bob Balaban) to make up a platoon and rescue important art pieces during the war, thus saving culture itself (and earning themselves the nickname in the film's title).
Clooney directed and wrote the movie with Grant Heslov, with whom he also made Argo, and The Monuments Men reminds me of that movie for a lot of reasons — important but little-known historical story, amazing ensemble cast (did I mention Cate Blanchett also costars?), and frankly, it looks fantastic. With all the talent involved, I'm sure it will be getting award buzz soon enough, or at least be the must-see movie of the holidays. The Monuments Men comes out Dec. 18, and you can watch the trailer after the jump.
