In the early 1970s, writer Clifford Irving (Gere) sells a "biography" about Howard Hughes, featuring exclusive information about the mysterious and fiercely private billionaire.
Eager for the juicy story, Irving's publishers pay him exorbitant advances for the manuscript — which he promptly fabricates.
