I'm intrigued by the trailer for this movie Sugar — and not just because it's also the name of the company where I happen to work (though I think that's a nice coincidence). One of the best-received films of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, Sugar was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize there and went on to nab an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Screenplay. Reviews for the film have been overwhelmingly positive, with praise surfacing like Variety calling the film "sympathetic, genial and exceedingly wholesome," and Hollywood Reporter declaring that "the immigrant experience has been seen many times on film before but rarely with the authenticity, wit and intelligence of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Sugar."
Judging from the trailer alone, the film appears to be worthy of such praise. The story follows baseball star Miguel "Sugar" Santos, who is recruited from the Dominican Republic to play in the US minor leagues. The movie will get a limited run in theaters starting April 3.
