How Kermit and Miss Piggy's Breakup Will Affect The Muppets' New Show

The Muppets are coming to primetime this week, and like a lot of The Muppets' projects, the new show isn't just for kids. There's a fresh, funny style and tone to bring Kermit, Miss Piggy, and the gang into modern network TV, and the show's two biggest stars and their executive producers came to Summer TCA to clear up some things about the series. Here are the questions you've definitely had since the show was announced, answered — like what kind of series this is and the current relationship status of Kermit and Piggy.

Not that the show will necessarily be for adults only, but The Muppets will be on at 8 p.m., and it's a single-camera comedy with a sense of humor that's decidedly grown up. It's documentary-style, led by someone who knows his way around a mockumentary: Randall Einhorn, a director from The Office. So what are they documenting? Miss Piggy has a late-night show, Up Late With Miss Piggy, and the other muppets will be working on the show. But it won't just be about the late-night show; exec producers Bill Prady and Bob Kushell said it will focus on the behind-the-scenes stuff that happens, like Kermit being stuck on the 405 or Miss Piggy without makeup (!) in the morning at home.

The pilot of the show features Elizabeth Banks, and the late-night show will give the series tons of opportunity for celebrity cameos. Prady said there will be "a big celebrity every week," and Kermit promised "the best people in all of show business," while also claiming to do all the booking for Piggy's show. Piggy also dropped the name of one upcoming guest: Reese Witherspoon.

Kermit and Piggy Are NOT Together Right Now

The Summer of breakups continues: at the TCA panel, Kermit and Piggy confirmed their breakup and released a mutual statement on Twitter. But they will be working together harmoniously on Piggy's show, they claimed, with Kermit saying he is taking a behind-the-scenes backseat by being an executive producer. Piggy addressed their erstwhile relationship, saying, "I have no problem working with my ex. Dating moi is like flying close to the sun. It was inevitable that Kermit would drop down to the ground while I stayed in the heavens." (Kermit's reply: "I thought you were going to say 'get burned.'") No doubt we will see this play out on the show, and for the record, Kermit is currently dating Denise, the show's head of marketing (she's pictured far left here).
