On this week's Halloween episode of Pretty Little Liars, we're all thrown for a pretty big loop when we find out, beyond all doubt, that Alison is alive. "Did you miss me?" Ali asks as she shows up right at the end of the episode. She gives the girls a bunch of vague hints about how it's not safe for her to return home and that she needs their help, but then she really gives us something to latch on to. "Remember what I told you at the hospital, Hanna," she says, and just a moment later, she's gone.
First of all, let's all take a moment to rewatch the hospital scene between Hanna and Ali.
For some reason, I take great comfort in the fact that Alison starts this appearance off the same way she does in the Halloween episode: "Did you miss me?" It makes me feel like I've come to the right place. Let's go over a few of the most interesting quotes, and what kind of implications they might carry for the second half of season four, after the jump.
"The four of you combined . . . you remember more about that night than you think you do."
Alison says this to Hanna after being asked exactly what happened the night Ali disappeared. In a literal sense, this means the girls need to really look closer at their fragmented memories and work together to weave them into one cohesive story. This could also mean that the girls might be hot on this path when the show returns in January. But on a more figurative level, Ali could be saying something else: the answer is right in front of you, and you just haven't figured it out yet. Could this be Ali's cryptic way of confirming that Ezra is, in fact, A?
"Telling the truth to the wrong person at the wrong time is how I ended up where I am."
This doesn't really tell us much about why Ali disappeared, but it does reveal something else. The person responsible for Ali's disappearance is someone she thought she could trust. Not only was it a person who appeared trustworthy, but it's also someone Ali confided in, someone she could trust with her secrets. We don't know for sure that Ali and Ezra ever met, but we do know one thing: someone close to the girls could be very, very bad.
"You're always better off with a really good lie."
Along the same vein as the previous quote, the girls have to be very careful about whom they trust going forward. Now they know something very few people know: Alison DiLaurentis is alive, and they have to prevent other people from finding out. In a show with "liars" in the title, it seems like it's high time for the girls to start doing just that.
What did you think? Did you find any clues that we missed?
