Pushing Daisies Recap: Episode Four, "Frescorts"

Pushing Daisies Rundown: Episode Four, "Frescorts"

Ah, friendship. As all of the Pushing Daisies characters learn one way or another, it's a necessary component to a full life. Then again, when you get trapped in a locker or gifted a creepy taxidermied dog, friends don't look so good, do they? This episode is one quirky meditation on friendship, and we can talk about it if you

.

Starting with my favorite thing about this episode: Emerson! Through meeting Young Emerson, we learn he's been a spy since babyhood and grew up super-close with his P.I. mother. The appearance of Calista Cod is all-around fantastic, as she turns out to be investigating Emerson himself after she came across a rejection letter for Lil' Gumshoe. I loved the way Emerson breaks out this sad puppy-dog face around his mama, and the scene with the two of them simultaneously interrogating their clients is outstanding. And in the end, Mama Cod gives Emerson some wise advice: If he wants to bring his daughter home, he should stop talking about what a cool kid he was and start focusing on what a great dad he'll be.

While all of that is going on, the case leads the team to My Best Friend Inc., a rent-a-friend company where the murder victim was working as a "frescort." Suspicion initially falls on Randy Mann (guest star David Arquette), considering he likes taxidermy and meat pies and obviously needs some friends. He and Ned start to form a bond, since Ned gets the whole loneliness thing, but when Randy gives Ned a taxidermied golden retriever with a guitar, well, all bets are off. Another suspect, Barb, was dating Joe, and she starts to look guilty after she shoves Chuck and Olive in a locker, but she turns up dead in a hug machine. Finally, the team hits on its culprit: Buddy Amicus (ha), the nerdy founder of My Best Friend Inc. who invented the lie that he was a former star quarterback just trying to pass on his abundant social skills to others. This is all revealed in a particularly quirky sequence involving Spartan costumes and jock straps.

Meanwhile:

  • Oh, Ned is so, so lonely. I loved his reactions to the hug machine — first horror, then a resigned, schmoopy-happy face as the arms close around him.
  • It's nice that he recognizes that this loneliness is something he can work on, though. Yes, Chuck can know all his secrets, but that's not an excuse to avoid dealing with the regular world.
  • Chuck and Olive trapped in a locker together is one of my favorite scenes of the season. Obviously their issues were big enough that all that water wasn't going to stay under the bridge. The "Our universe is forever expanding" "Like your neediness" exchange was harsh, and Chuck's "I feel like a sachet in the panty drawer of a shut-in who was shut in her closet by her cats so they wouldn't have to smell the scent of freesia" was just . . . wow.
  • Actually, this episode has a few great Chuck and Olive moments, including the one where they imitate different emotions to get hired at My Best Friend. "Consternation!"
  • "I want to duvet you right this second" is my new favorite expression. But I am surprised that a buck-naked Chuck is a comfort to Ned, considering the whole no-touching thing.

What did you think? Are you ready for Ned to find a friend? What hilarity will arise from Olive and Chuck being roommates? And can we make Emerson's mom a permanent addition to the team?

MrDPember - Glad to know I'm not the only one! I usually understand everything that's going on with the episode but sometimes I miss the "explanation" about why the murderer killed his/her victims because I feel like its gets rushed through too quickly. I do like the rapid pace of the show, but I wish i could rewind the episodes or put on subtitles while I'm watching.

TheEnchantedOne — that impressed me, too, about Digby and Pigby. After all, Pigby has already been known to kill . . .

It was so nice to see Emerson as a kid and having detective adventures with his mom! And my, that last scene with Chuck and Ned made my eyes grow wiiide. I didn't expect that. Haha. I know, right? Won't that make Ned want to touch her more? Lol. Well, that's what imagination's for. Hehee. And Digby and Pigby got along that first scene huh? Although all that we saw were them smelling each other - they're still in the getting-to-know-you stage :)

I LOVE LOVE LOOOOOOVE this show. Like CA girl said, I do have a hard time following. I get the jist of what is going on/plot - the who done it, etc., but I have a hard time catching all of the dialogue. It is more just a generalization of what is going on and then me hearing some, not all, of the dialogue. I really need closed captioning for this show and/or the DVDs so I can re-watch them. A second viewing would also be helpful to catch the quotes.

& briggs - I so agree. I want there to be some loophole with Ned's "talent".

CAgirl, I can't say I have the same problem. I love the quick pace of the show. Here are the answers for you :): why did that Buddy Amicus guy started killing people? --- He was a dork in high school and thought the star quarterback was his best friend (he was delusional). When he found out he wasn't, he killed him. Then he killed the best friend guy b/c of a similar reason. He thought they were best friends, but then realized that the guy was just an employee when he went to quit. how did that girl get killed by the hug machine? --- Buddy turned it up really high so it squeezed her to death. why, in the beginning, did Emerson's mother push out the baby marriage with the doll in it? --- Emerson's mom is a detective too and she was trying to prove that the guy who saved the "baby" was not really handicapped. So when he jumped out of his wheelchair to save the "baby" she caught him on film.

I must be the only person who does not like Emerson at all. He kills this show for me [no pun intended]. Each week Lee Pace makes my heart melt even more!

Loved this episode! Locker scene was awesome (I rewound it several times just to make sure I got all!) and I didn't find naked Chuck at all weird. Sex & passion are a major part of their boyfriend-girlfriend dynamic. I think they were just trying to make us remember that even though Ned & Chuck cant't touch, they still have desire. Isn't imagination like 90% of good sex anyway? :)

I almost wish I had bad taste in television. It's not fair that I always have to worry about some of my favorite shows because less interesting television gets good ratings for I don't know what reason. It's like people want television to be as mediocre as possible or just less interesting than what it could be.

Oh and I really hope that Emerson finds his daughter. Emerson is really awesome, and I loved that his mom turned out to be white. I just think its cool for some reason. The lady who played his mom did a great job too...wasn't she was on Everwood?

I LOVED Ned this episode - so sweet and cute! I agree, poor Ned getting his present - a naked Chuck and he can't touch her! When oh when will Ned's father come back, explain he has the same thing, and explain some rules like maybe when it's a full moon he can re-touch the dead! haha in my dreams! I might die if they ever cancel this show, that or resort to Chuck's mood enhancers just to get by :)

This episode was good. But am I the only one having trouble keeping up with the mysteries? They talk so fast that I can't figure out: why did that Buddy Amicus guy started killing people? how did that girl get killed by the hug machine? why, in the beginning, did Emerson's mother push out the baby carriage with the doll in it? Soo confused :? The scene with Olive and Chuck showing their range of emotions to the receptionist was funny. The duvet line that Ned said was great too, but it seemed odd. I guess Ned could get a little "excitement" out of that, but does that mean that Chuck is just going to stand there while he self-loves? Okay I'm thinking way too much about this.

The dog gift was so funny...but I am sad because I fell asleep and missed half of the show.

"But I am surprised that a buck-naked Chuck is a comfort to Ned, considering the whole no-touching thing." I agree! I wondered about that. I loved this episode. Olive and Chuck are hilarious when they're bickering. And I hope Emerson rewrites his book and his lil' gum shoe finally comes home!
