Pushing Daisies Rundown: Episode 5, "Girth"

Pushing Daisies Rundown: Episode 5, "Girth"

My first thought when I learned Pushing Daisies was doing a Halloween episode: "Aren't they all?" But it turns out that Daisies lends itself perfectly to even spookier stories of hauntings and ghosts. "Girth" was definitely a Halloween treat, and to read my thoughts on it, just

This was a good time to get an Olive-centric episode. She's learned Chuck's secret, and she's already refrained from telling the aunts, but now she's desperate to tell Ned (not knowing, of course, that Ned is well aware Chuck is, er, "alive again"). So it was perfect that this episode involved a secret that Olive had sworn long ago to keep.

The case itself was a great callback to the Headless Horseman and other storybook fables, with trampled jockeys, ghost horses and a villain in (brightly colored) disguise. As usual, the little touches were my favorites: the distinct horseshoe print on the face of every trampling victim; the very large trophies for very small jockeys; the bar where people over 60 inches tall couldn't drink.

Ned, meanwhile, had some past hauntings of his own to tend to. It amazes me that Daisies can show heartbreaking moments — say, the revelation that Ned's father had left him and had another family on the side — and still make them sweet. Ned had spent every Halloween sleeping where his old bed used to be, trying to deal with his dad's desertion — but it took Chuck's aunts telling him what a good man he'd become despite his jackass father before he could truly move on.

Some other thoughts:

  • Emerson's one-liners are always a highlight, but he was really on in this episode. A few favorites:

"Don't try to think that's a word that anybody knows."
"Think of it as an escrow between my thighs."
    "Different like purple and mauve."
The whole "conversation" with the money.

  • Speaking of one-liners, my favorite from the episode might actually be Olive's "I scream, you scream, no one screams when you fake your death!"
  • It's good that Olive and Chuck are getting some more screen time together as they battle for Ned's affections. The scene with Olive bouncing up and down on her bed cracked me up — but not as much as Olive finally getting swept off her feet by Ned, only to be dropped as soon as he realized Chuck was around.
  • Those of you musing over all the cleavage on this show a few weeks back must have gotten a kick out of JJJ's mother's barbs about Olive dressing demurely, huh?
  • I love that we're starting to get more glimpses of the aunts' personalities — Lily saying she'd get a shotgun when the doorbell rang, Vivian grabbing the candy bowl.
  • There were so many fantastic sight gags that picking the Sight Gag O' The Episode is pretty darn tough. The aunts' heads exploding (and being filled with confetti) is a contender as is the jack o' lantern turning into a frowny face when Young Ned got the postcard from his father. But if forced to pick a favorite, I'd say it's Young Ned and Digby trick-or-treating in their matching ghost outfits.
  • I wonder how long the actor who played JJJ practiced his horsey gait. That was a nice touch.

Did this very Daisies Halloween live up to your expectations? Are you loving Olive even more? And was that really a hint of recognition in the aunts' eyes when ghost-Chuck showed up on their doorstep?

Am I the only one immature enough to think that the whole "Jock Off 2000" thing was hillarious? I'm still head over heels for this show, and I love all of the characters! Olive is annoying sometimes, but I still love her :D

When I saw Digby's matching ghost costume, I was sooo tempted to go make one for my dog on the commercial break! Maybe next year for Halloween. (Although, technical question - how exactly did Ned get it on Digby without touching him?). Was I the only one cracking up both when Chuck was giving her pep talk to Digby about how the other ghosts are the ones that should be afraid of them? And also, when Emerson kissed his shovel after wacking granny in the head? Such great moments.

I love this show more & more every week. It makes me laugh yet still tugs at my heart strings in such unique ways. Can't rave about it more! I loved the Halloween epi. At first I couldn't stand Olive, but now that we see more of her complexity, she's really growing on me. I loved that one epi where she sang the song from Grease. Cracked me up!!!

this was my fave episode, hands down. in it, olive was even more endearing (c'mon, she's funny and sweet), and it made me like chuck more, too. and of course i already love love love ned and emerson. my fave line? when olive says something about a "hypoglycemic werewolf" This is the best thing on TV right now and puts other shows to shame. I am so embarrassed that I used to watch Grey's. I was letting myself get dumbed down!

I absolutely love this show. Like several people said, I didn't expect it to be SOOO good. It's comedy at it's finest. I love how fast they talk. Is that weird? lol

LaLa0428, no you're not the only one..me too! And my hubby thinks she's really annoying. We both like Olive :) How sad was the scene with Ned as a child watching his father with his new family. I actually teared up  I loved the actor that played JJJ, Hamish Linklater, he's from The New Adventures of Old Christine..he's so funny.

Ned and Digby's matching ghost costumes was my fav moment this week, but when every scene is magic it's like saying I prefer heart-shaped dark chocolate to square-shaped. Also loved Chuck's "Neigh, yourself!" line.

i honestly didn't know it was possible to make tv this good anymore. with the utter failings of grey's and most of my other standbys, it's good to know that creativity, originality, charm, and humor can still pull in viewers without having to be trashy or crude or dumbed-down. PD is by far my new favorite.

I love this show! There hasn't been an episode yet that doesn't end without a huge smile on my face! I am anxious for the next episode (in two weeks :( sigh) I love the love story btw chuck and ned so much, I hadn't ever though Olive would get a real shot! I know the whole point of the show is that chuck and ned can't touch but i hope they find some way! Perhaps the season finale??? hehe love this show!

fun episode! Ned's misty-eyed scene w/ the aunt was an "Aww!" moment. And, I'm glad we got to learn more about Olive and how she used to be a jockey (and Emerson laughing about it even when he promised not to). oh, how I love Emerson! And Digby matching costumes with Ned was very cute.

Love, love, loved this one! More than I thought I would, it being the Halloween episode and all. And Ned was more adorable in this one than he has ever been in any of the others, which is a hard task to accomplish considering how adorable he is on a constant basis. Ha.
