We saw some behind-the-scenes footage of Rise of the Planet of the Apes yesterday, but today brings the full trailer in all its glory. In the next brand-new chapter of the franchise, James Franco stars as Will, a scientist who's on the verge of changing the world by inventing "the cure": a drug that can cause the brain to repair itself. But, as his girlfriend (Freida Pinto) ominously points out, "some things aren't meant to be changed." When the drug is tested on an ape named Caesar (Andy Serkis), Will and his colleagues quickly learn they're dealing with more than just a cure for Alzheimer's. Caesar begins to display some seriously human-like qualities and starts a revolution with his fellow apes.
I wasn't expecting much from this film, but I have to admit the preview gave me goosebumps. The franchise is definitely getting a much-needed boost from modern technology (and it certainly doesn't hurt that the special effects are done by the same team that worked on Avatar). As with all of Planet of the Apes films, it raises the question of animal intelligence and cruelty while still packing in action sequences. We'll know more when the movie opens Aug. 5, but take a look at the preview when you read more.
