The 18 Saddest TV Deaths We Were Forced to Mourn in 2016

In many ways, 2016 has been a rough year. This is especially true in the world of television, because we've lost so many beloved characters over the course of these months. The beginning of the year was rocky with a dead House of Cards favorite and too many deaths to count in the sixth season of Game of Thrones. More recently, we sobbed over Glenn and his final words to Maggie, plus some major upheaval on Scream Queens (which, in retrospect, we should have anticipated). Oh, but the grief doesn't stop there.

01
Hodor, Game of Thrones
HBO

Hodor, Game of Thrones

You know what's so damn tragic about Hodor's death? It's twice as much agony. Not only do we watch Hodor die protecting Bran from the White Walkers, but in the same moment, we learn the painful backstory for the disability that ruined him in the first place. In both cases, it's Bran's fault.

02
Barbara Holland, Stranger Things
Everett Collection

Barbara Holland, Stranger Things

Oh, Barb, we hardly knew ye. It was so nice to see a different kind of character in the TV spotlight . . . until she's mercilessly pulled into another dimension and murdered by the Demogorgon.

03
Glenn Rhee, The Walking Dead
AMC

Glenn Rhee, The Walking Dead

After more than six months, we finally learned who Negan kills on The Walking Dead. Tragically, and much in the same way he dies in the comics, Glenn gets his head beaten in by Lucille. It's gross and heart-wrenching.

04
Norma Bates, Bates Motel
Everett Collection

Norma Bates, Bates Motel

Anyone who's familiar with Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho knows that Norma Bates has been a doomed character from the very first episode of Bates Motel. The "who," "when," "how," and "why" of it all have been a mystery — until this year. Norman poisons his mother in her sleep, intending to commit suicide as well, while "Mr. Sandman" plays dreamily in the background. His plan is foiled, but Norma still succumbs to the gas, and Norman is left to his own insane devices.

05
Poussey Washington, Orange Is the New Black
Everett Collection

Poussey Washington, Orange Is the New Black

Thanks to the horrifying combination of an inmate struggle and vastly untrained guards, Poussey dies from suffocation. If you need any help understanding the gravity of the death, just see how the internet reacted.

06
Edward Meechum, House of Cards
Everett Collection

Edward Meechum, House of Cards

The secret service agent was not only just really damn likable, but he may have been the only character on the series completely absent of cynicism; the one person in the White House who seemed actually, deeply good. Think about it: has any other relatively central character on the Netflix show been so unwaveringly loyal? So endearingly innocent? So completely devoid of ulterior motives? Nope.

07
Chad Radwell, Scream Queens
Fox

Chad Radwell, Scream Queens

He may have survived season one, but in season two, the "Green Meanie" offs Chad Radwell . . . on his wedding day, no less. Suffice it to say, our love for Chad will never die. Still, we're sad that Scream Queens is about to be a lot less naked.

08
Jack, This Is Us
NBC

Jack, This Is Us

Throughout the first few episodes, we couldn't shake the dreaded feeling that Jack might be dead in the present day. We've never been more sorry to be correct. He's clearly such a good dad, which is why we're mourning the loss with everyone else who's devastated. The worst part is that he hasn't died on the show yet, so we have that tearjerker of an episode to look forward to.

09
Robin Hood, Once Upon a Time
ABC

Robin Hood, Once Upon a Time

It's safe to say Robin Hood's death shot us straight in the heart (pun intended). Just when we thought Regina might actually get her happy ending, her true love meets a bitter end when Hades obliterates his soul. Hopefully the writers can work a little bit of magic when his character makes another appearance this season.

10
Bran's Direwolf Summer, Game of Thrones
HBO

Bran's Direwolf Summer, Game of Thrones

Hodor's not the only one to die in that terrible altercation with the White Walkers on Game of Thrones. We also watch as Summer makes the ultimate sacrifice for Bran. We're gutted. Positively gutted.

11
Simon, Quantico
ABC

Simon, Quantico

Quantico is so full of twists and turns that we weren't even sure if Simon was a terrorist for most of the show's first season. In the end, he makes the ultimate sacrifice for his team (and the world), a decision that still haunts his former FBI team members. We'll miss him, until ABC inevitably brings him back in a future season as an improbable plot twist.

12
Rory, American Horror Story: Roanoke
FX

Rory, American Horror Story: Roanoke

If you don't think Rory's death on American Horror Story matters, you're wrong. Fans of the show (and of Evan Peters) waited weeks for the actor to make his Roanoke appearance. In the My Roanoke Nightmare reenactment, he promptly dies. Once it switches to real life, he dies again. Needless to say, the general population was enraged.

13
Angus, Outlander
Everett Collection

Angus, Outlander

In a show filled with war, brutal rape, and time travel, things can get a little stressful. Luckily, Angus was always there to provide a seemingly never-ending stream of comic relief with his buddy, Rupert. That's why seeing him dying from internal bleeding on a table, with Claire unable to help and Rupert looking shell-shocked, felt like a stab wound to my own gut.

14
Margaery Tyrell, Game of Thrones
HBO

Margaery Tyrell, Game of Thrones

Maybe the reason Margaery is so great is because she really challenges the Lannisters. We had to hand it to the queen for manipulating her way into King's Landing, and even for manipulating her way out of the High Sparrow's captivity. She was a fighter, and that's why it sucked so much when Cersei unceremoniously blows her to bits.

15
Rhonda, Empire
Fox

Rhonda, Empire

Oh, Rhonda. Poor, poor, Rhonda. As if being shoved down a massive, steep flight of stairs and suffering a miscarriage at the hands of a deranged psychopath wasn't enough, Kaitlin Doubleday's character falls to her death and lands with a brutal, fatal thud on a car below. Since day one, I felt her character was a letdown because there was so much more to her that could have been fleshed out. I think that's why her death felt so immensely unsatisfying. Rhonda deserved better, y'all.

16
Denise Hemphill, Scream Queens
Fox

Denise Hemphill, Scream Queens

We're going to miss Denise Hemphill. She uttered a bulk of the show's best quotes, including, "Shondell, why you got a knife in your throat?!" and "Uh-uh. It smells like booty in here." The show just won't be the same without her.

17
Abraham Ford, The Walking Dead
AMC

Abraham Ford, The Walking Dead

Abraham's death has vastly been overshadowed by the loss of Glenn, but trust us, we're sad about this one too. It's even worse when you catch this small detail about the scene in question. We'll miss you, big guy.

18
Tommen Baratheon, Game of Thrones
Everett Collection

Tommen Baratheon, Game of Thrones

Tommen is just a tragic, tragic victim of his insane mother, Cersei Lannister. He's so wrecked by everything he goes through, and the death of his queen Margaery is the last straw. The only thing worse than watching a character get murdered is watching a character kill himself. That's just bleak.
