Song for the Winter Solstice

Today is the Winter Solstice, a.k.a. the shortest day of the year followed by the longest night. The looming darkness just makes me want to listen to some good, wintry music. Fortunately, I've found the perfect thing: "Winter Solstice" by Sufjan Stevens, from his newly released album, Songs For Christmas. Tune in on Monday for my review of the massive five-disc set, but until then, enjoy this excellent and very appropriate track.

And he's BEAUTIFUL... inside and out. I work the indie mag scene in New York and the Tucson music scene as a writer and I'm a musician myself. "Sister Winter" is one of the most beautiful songs, and I love "Star of Wonder". You should check out Rosie Thomas' newest - "These Friends of Mine." She recorded it in Brooklyn with Sufjan and Denison Witmer. It's amazing. It's currently available only online at outlets like iTunes. I love it when people I know and like do amazing work.

That's really cool that you're friends with him. The "Songs for Christmas" album is so great with all the extra stuff (and all 42 songs :)), and I love the story behind why he started doing all the Christmas music in the first place. He definitely seems to be a really hard-working musician.

Sufjan is a good friend of mine. Songs For Christmas came about from the CDs he's done almost every year as little Christmas cards for his friends.
