Stephen Colbert's Presidential Dreams Crash to a Halt

Stephen Colbert's Presidential Dreams Crash to a Halt

Well, guys, it's official: Stephen Colbert will not be our president. The South Carolina Democratic Party denied his application for the ballot on Thursday, saying he wasn't serious about the race. (No!)

"The council really agonized over this because they really like him, they love his show, and everyone thinks it’s wonderful that he cares about us," said Carol Fowler, chairwoman of the state's Democratic Party. But in the end, voting members smacked down Colbert's quest by a vote of 13-3.

Well, it was probably bound to happen; the party would have had to pay $20,000 to list Colbert's name, and that's a whole lot of money to sustain a joke. I hope those who were so excited about Colbert's candidacy can find a real candidate to back; if not, it certainly says something about our political system. Meanwhile, to watch a clip of Colbert getting the bad news — complete with sober balloon drop, a sad trombone player, and the dismantling of all his plans for the country — just

He knew it would happen. He was just making a point, which came across rather effectively I do believe.

I'm all for exercising our rights as Americans, but, FYI, as long as the Electoral College is in place, the popular vote doesn't really matter!!!! so go out and vote, but don't be surprised when your vote doesn't count.

I'm so glad he wasn't allowed not only was he doing it as a joke. He has no political experiance. I also agree w/ karisaamy everyone needs to get out there and vote.

That sucks. My beloved and I had a great conversation over this. We agree that he should have been 'allowed' to run just because this is the USA. I don't think that he's the best man to lead our country, but it just goes to show that the person who would be may not ever get the chance.

that sucks. anyone who has as much support as he had should be allowed to run. why should i vote for the "real" candidates when none of them appeal to me? and karisaamy, the US Electoral College is what led to the "Gore-like problem." And that has nothing to do with Colbert's situation.

I'm glad that he was not allowed to campaign for president as a joke. He would actually be taking away votes from real candidates, and we don't want another Gore-like problem again. Yes, more people would vote, but it's not actually a positive vote, you are not making a difference by voting for a fake candidate. I have a degree in Political Science, for me it's fun to vote without having to add a comedian running. You learn more about the process and it's affects when you are a real part of it. More people need to take action and do the little things like vote, and vote for every election. Ok I will get off my soapbox now.
