Saying NBC has put a bit of effort into promoting Phenomenon would be like saying Pushing Daisies is "a bit cute" or Dr. House is "a bit cranky." I'm hoping that the show's premiere tonight means my viewing of other NBC shows will no longer be interrupted by a Phenomenon ad covering up the bottom quarter of the screen.
The show, hosted by Uri Geller and Criss Angel, is essentially a cross between a magic show and American Idol. Ten mentalists and mystifiers will demonstrate their talents each week on a panel of celebrity guests (including the girls from The Girls Next Door and Raven Symone), and viewers at home will choose which contestants stay and which go home.
Most of you said a show like this wouldn't be up your alley, so I'm wondering if NBC made a big mistake in making this a show where the viewers choose a winner. Do people at home really care about picking "the next great mentalist"? On the other hand, some of the magical, mystical tricks Phenomenon has promised probably look pretty cool.
