TV Tonight: "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip"

"Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip," once one of the most anticipated new series on TV, airs what could be its final episode tonight. NBC announced last week that "The Black Donnellys," the new show from Oscar-winner Paul Haggis, will premiere next Monday in "Studio 60"'s place. And because no date has been set for the return of "Studio 60," tonight's episode could be the last chance fans have to see Matt, Danny, Harriet, and Jordan in action.

The San Francisco Chronicle's TV critic has an interesting column today on why "Studio 60" didn't work. Sadly, I have to agree with most of it — I really wanted to like "Studio 60," but it just never clicked for me. Still, it would be a shame for the show to just disappear from TV without a chance for a satisfying ending, so I hope NBC finds a way to let it finish out the season. In the meantime, you can see the promo for tonight's episode if you

Why is it so hard for people to accept a show that makes you think and laugh? We know they can supplement the laughing with a laugh track but how come we have to give up so much for a think track? I will agree that there were actors in this show who portrayed brilliant characters but were not given enough time to grow. But I also have to think that a handful of episodes is not enough to say that a show of this caliber isn't going anywhere. NBC is the king of new night/new time. I only hope that they can find that sweet spot for Studio 60 and not leave me hanging.

While I love Studio 60, I find myself watching now only because there was a run of episodes that got me very invested in the characters, and I really care about them and watch so that I can check in with them. They've done some good things with the show, but then some parts have fallen flat. Tonight's episode might be the last? That makes me a little sad, because they could have gone out with a better episode. It was SO SLOW. And last week's just depressed me. I love the development between Jordan and Danny (although it tends to feel like the unlikely happy-ending scenario of what happens when you score a date with your big crush). And I love that Harry's going to fix Matt. But it all feels a little... off. ceeg, I agree that it's offensive that fans of the show are called dumb, but it's no reason to lash out at other shows that have bigger followings. I don't watch heroes, but just because they're using comic book plots isn't necessarily a bad thing. There are so many people watching it that have never picked up a comic book in their life. So let them be exposed to it. And personally, I often get tired of people bashing Lost because it actually makes them think or TRY to think. But that could just be the fact that I like a mystery, and I like television to stimulate me mentally every now and then. Not as good as reading, but it's somewhat close. -Bug

Studio 60 is definitely one of the best shows on television, but it does have its flaws. For example, it makes you think. There are many people that do not want to think while watching television and therefore don't like it. It attacks the right and FCC and such and that could be considered offensive. It's on too late (anyone think it should be moved up to a Tuesday or Wednesday at 9, where's there's a better possiblity of high ratings?). On the other hand (in a nutshell), it's well written, well directed, and well acted, and it would be a shame to throw away all that talent. I'm highly disappointed (and saddened) to hear that tonight may be the last episode. Love live Studio 60!

I love this show too, and I find it to be wickedly funny. I was surprised to hear the critics pan it for it's LACK of humor. If you've ever read anything about the behind-the-scenes stuff at SNL, then Studio 60 is even funnier. There are so many of the cast and crews' nuances thrown into the sub-plots of Studio 60 that it's almost an educational/documentary program. And frankly, I enjoy being educated about all things pop-culture... sad but true... Anyway, I will be sad to see it go, if this is in fact the last episode.

I love this show and never understood why people didn't like it. And I certainly didn't appreciate the critics who basically equated fans of the show to dumb, tasteless, ignoramuses. Although, I must agree that Sarah Paulson was a miscast. Why am I the only one who can hear that horrible hissing lisp!?!? And if she's a Christian, what's she doing fornicating with Matt??!?! I'm a little pissed this show might go away and tripe like Grey's Lobotomy, Lost (no really, the plots so convoluted, I'm totally lost), Comic Book Rip-off, er... Heroes (seriously, why haven't the creators been sued yet, this plot's been done over 20 times in comics), and Desperate Rich Whiny Anorexic Sluts are still on the air. Talk about dumb. I guess if you want to just be titillated, then those shows will work for you. I think the critics were too harsh on Studio 60. Come on, the skits aren't funny? Heck, SNL hasn't been funny in a DECADE and I thought the un-funniness of the show was why the pilot happened in the first place? Oh well, if Studio 60 does enter oblivion, at least I'll always have it on my iTunes and I can nurse my Matthew Perry crush for a few more years. -the ceeg

Interesting article. I really did try to care about the plots and characters, but the show just never caught on for me.
