3 Reasons Tom Hiddleston Fans Must See I Saw the Light

Tom Hiddleston plays legendary country singer Hank Williams in the Thanksgiving release of I Saw the Light, but I got an early peek of the movie at this year's Toronto International Film Festival. The biopic has its shortcomings, but that does not include the portrayal of Williams by Hiddleston. In fact, if you are any kind of fan of the British star, I Saw the Light needs to be on your Fall movie list — and here's why.

He Sings

For Williams's memorable hits like "Move It on Over," "Your Cheatin' Heart," and "Hey, Good Lookin'," filmmakers didn't dub Williams's voice into the film — that's all Hiddleston singing. The actor practiced his songs with present-day country singer Rodney Crowell to get just the right twang to match Williams's voice, and you've got to hear it if you love Hiddleston.

He's Dramatic

Williams struggled with alcoholism, with substance abuse, and in his relationship with his wife, Audrey (Elizabeth Olsen). These scenes give Hiddleston material to prove his dramatic chops, which will impress you and maybe surprise you if you mainly know Hiddleston for playing the tricksy Loki in The Avengers.

He's Never Played a Role Like This Before

As much as we love Loki, Hiddleston has not starred in a huge variety of movies, and this is the first time he's had the lead in a biopic. Even though reception of the movie hasn't exactly been huge, most people have agreed that Hiddleston is the strongest part of the film. Whatever happens, it's good to see Hiddleston getting these kinds of roles, which will hopefully lead to his star rising even higher.
