We Now Interrupt This Ad with ... a TV Show

Fox has a plan to stop DVR junkies like me from fast-forwarding through ads, and his name is Oleg. The animated taxi driver will show up in eight-second spots during commercial breaks, starting with Fox's primetime programming tonight. According to the Wall Street Journal, Oleg will spew random bits of wisdom and even chat with spoof versions of celebrities like Donald Trump. It's just one of many strategies the networks are planning to keep us glued to the couch during breaks.

It's an interesting idea, kind of the television equivalent of those cartoons that break up New Yorker stories, and it might liven things up for people who watch TV without DVRs (or VCRs). But even if there is something compelling enough to keep me tuned into ads, I don't think Oleg's it. The Wall Street Journal story came with two short clips of Oleg, and they just didn't seem terribly memorable or funny. I imagine I'll find myself fast-forwarding right past them, too. I fun Oleg really funny and charming. I like fun commercials not because of the product they are trying to sell but because of the creativity of the people that are behind them. I think that Oleg is fun to watch (more so than it is to watch the commercials) I only wish that they give it more TV time to know if it is a really good thing, as it seems to be, or if its NOT.

I think they have potential, but Fox has gotta make the writing more coherent. The animation looks good, at least!

Cute. Not a bad experiment. I wonder how it'll go.

That's funny you mention the volume Phil, that's one of my frequent bitches, that commercials are recorded at twice the volume of television shows, they come blasting into your livingroom. It's just rude. lol ------------------------------------------------------ "What's got two thumbs and hates Todd Packer, This Guy! Jim Halpert

Amen Jinx. If there were more commercials like Levis' Stampede or French Dictionary, I'd watch through commercials. But, how many times can a person watch a commercial over and over again. The fact that commercials are broadcasted louder than the feature show doesn't help either. This Oleg character doesn't seem funny at all.

I actually appreciate a good television commercial. Its the stupid ones, or the ones that are repeated constantly through the same show that get me clicking. ------------------------------------------------------ "What's got two thumbs and hates Todd Packer, This Guy! Jim Halpert

Another thing -- this seems to be backpacking on the popularity of Borat. Not to mention its thriving on a stereotype. Booyaka!

I find the 60 second theatre bits from GE more entertaining than this. But it still takes a DVR to work. Booyaka!
