5 Things You Need to Remember About the First Amazing Spider-Man

May 2 2014 - 2:00am

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 [1] comes out this weekend, and if the last time you watched the original Andrew Garfield installment was 2012, you'll need a refresher before you see the sequel. Certain threads that were left loose are important to remember for the new movie's plot, so we've rounded up those tidbits from the first movie.

The Richard Parker Mystery

The first movie focuses on Spider-Man's origins, namely his family dynamic since his parents had taken off when Peter was a child, leaving him to be raised by his Aunt Mae and Uncle Ben. We see flashbacks of Richard Parker and his wife leaving, a snippet of a video he creates, and a trashed room in the Parker house before they leave. We also hear his name associated with Oscorp but don't learn why. The movie doesn't get around to telling us why they left or what Richard was doing at Oscorp, but don't worry: the sequel addresses this.

Peter and Gwen Had Broken Up

Peter and Gwen fall hard for each other in the first movie, but they don't get to live happily ever after. Peter breaks up with Gwen, though it breaks his heart . . .

Because Her Father Had Died

You may remember that Uncle Ben dies in the first movie, but don't forget that Gwen's dad, police Captain Stacy, also dies, a victim of the Lizard. With his dying breath, he makes Peter promise to "leave Gwen out of it." Haunted by the request, Peter makes good but is shown at the end of the movie remarking to Gwen that the best promises are the ones you break.

We Never Meet Norman Osborn

But we do hear about him — he's referenced by Dr. Curt Connors and an Oscorp associate, who talk about how he's dying. This comes into play because Harry Osborn (played by Dane DeHaan) shows up in the sequel — as does Norman.

The End Credits Scene

At the very end of the movie, Connors, aka the Lizard, has been put away, but he gets a visitor. It's a mysterious man whose face we don't see, and he wants to know if Connors told Peter about his father — while Connors insists that he to leave Peter alone.
