When Do You Read Movie Reviews?

When I'm not writing movie reviews for a particular film, I like checking out what other people have to say about it. But I always debate whether I should read the reviews before I see the movie, so I'll know how some critics I respect felt about it, or if I should wait till later, so I won't have all of their thoughts in my head while I watch. That, of course, got me thinking about your habits. When do you like to read a movie's reviews?

Mostly I'll glance at them before, if it's something I want to see. But I read reviews just to get a perspective - doesn't change whether I go see the movie or not, because reviews are just somebody's opinion. Most of the time, I do the opposite of what the big critics say - most of the movies that I like, they hate; the ones I hate, they like!

I always read them before and after I go or even when I don't go at all. I just love to read the paper and that's one of my favorite sections.

In general I just like reading movies reviews: movies that I plan on seeing regardless, movies I've never even heard of, movies I have no intention of seeing, obscure movies I may never have the chance to see. Then I always check out IMDB and RottenTomatoes after a movie. I'm always curious to know what other people thought and whether I agree with them.

I read ones on here sometimes, but generally I don't see the point. I always end up liking the movies I think I'll like. I pretty much always know whether I should bother seeing a movie.

I don't have time to waste on movies that I'm not going to like. I am one of those obnoxious people who want to know the plot in detail before I go. I usually try to read the book first. I end up just renting most of the time. Previews are so misleading now. They often have very little to do with the movie. There have been many movies that look stupid in preview and then are great and vice-versa.

I stopped reading reviews a long time ago, especially by "professionals", I never seemed to agree with their opinion of a movie.

i don't typically read reviews all that often since my taste for movies tends to be different than reviewers - but i almost always read the ones on here first to get a sense of what you're thinking. i feel like the reviews on Buzz are more in line with my preferences in general.

There are some movies that I will go see no matter what the reviews are like, and for those, I generally wait until after I've seen it, just because nothing a critic says could ever sway me in that regard. For movies I know less about, I skim a couple reviews because I want to know if it's worth my money. Would that I could, I'd go see every movie, but I just don't have $9.00 to spend on a movie ticket and end up not liking the movie.

Whenever, really -- before, after, again once I've seen the movie.

It depends on the movie really, but when its a movie I really want to see I try not to read reviews before I go see it. I don't like to go into the movie with a biased opinion, I'd rather make my own judgments. :)

Not purposely...like Gaucholoco, I prefer to know little about the movie and be surprised. A lot of times it's unavoidable though, especially if it's a really popular movie, so I take the reviews with a grain of salt. It's sometimes nice to know what to expect, but I like to formulate my own opinions.

Before I go, I try to get a variety of different opinions on a film so I can tell if it's worth my time. I rent 99% of movies I watch. I *hate* wasting money and I like to be able to turn off a film halfway through if it annoys me. I don't like walking out of the theatre but I will do it!

If I'm really into a movie, then I'll read it before and after. If not, I'll read the review anyway.

i tend to read them after i see the movie. I hate it when people say "I don't want to see that movie because my friend said it was shitty" I like to have my own opinion of the movie.

I generally like to know as little as possible about a movie before seeing it, but with bigger budget studio productions that's pretty much impossible. In those cases I'll try to avoid the trailers more than the reviews.
