Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Has an Interesting Connection to Bellatrix Lestrange

Last weekend weekend, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them transported fans back to the wizarding world, and let's just say, it's one heck of a ride. While the film is full of Harry Potter nods, one of the most intriguing connections has to be Newt Scamander's (Eddie Redmayne) former flame Leta Lestrange. Yes, you read that last name correctly. We're sure you have tons of questions, so we're breaking down all the details about her character here.

While Leta is never mentioned in the Harry Potter books, Fantastic Beasts does shed a little light on her character. As Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol) spots a photograph of a young woman (portrayed by Zoë Kravitz) in Newt's office, she reads his mind and discovers that her name is actually Leta Lestrange. Although Newt asks Queenie to get out of his head, she digs deeper, learning that the two were once friends and possibly romantically involved during their time at Hogwarts. She also adds that Leta was a taker, suggesting that the two had a bitter falling out.

Of course, any Harry Potter fan knows that Leta's last name has a very notable reputation in the wizarding world. While Bellatrix is only a Lestrange by marriage, the rest of the family is just as cruel and twisted. They are one of the original Sacred Twenty-Eight (truly pureblood families) and are known for their extreme wealth, pureblood supremacy, and practice of the Dark Arts. A few members of the family even go on to become Death Eaters.

While Kravitz's small role was only added after production began, there is a chance she will return with "a meatier part" in the sequel. Director David Yates has already confirmed that the second Fantastic Beasts film will include young Dumbledore, so there is also a possibility that we'll also see flashbacks of Newt and Leta at Hogwarts. Since Leta is only one generation older than Voldemort, the rest of the franchise could go on to uncover the origins of dark magic in the wizarding world. We can't wait!
