What You May Not Realize About Tracee Ellis Ross's Important Golden Globe Win

Tracee Ellis Ross taking home the Golden Globe for best actress in a TV musical or comedy was exciting for more people than just fans of Black-ish. Ross is the first black actress to take home the award since 1983, when Debbie Allen won for Fame. At a time when race is top of mind when award season nominations are rolling out (let us never forget #OscarsSoWhite), showing a powerful, outrageously funny black woman winning a coveted award (not even a supporting role, a main role!) is incredibly important. Not only is Ross wonderful, her character is an intelligent, successful doctor who also happens to be a strong, loving mother dealing with racial and family politics in 2016.

You go, Ross.
