Unpopular teenage waitress Sam has a secret life online, where she messages with "PrincetonGuy," her soulful, anonymous penpal. Little does she know that her online confidant is actually Austin, the most popular guy at her school, who is struggling with decisions about his future, too.

Like He's All That, this underrated Lindsay Lohan comedy is loosely based on the Pygmalion story. Here, it's a little more meta. Lola, an aspiring actress, moves to suburban New Jersey with her family and struggles to fit in. She tries to boost her image with a series of increasingly outlandish lies, all set against the backdrop of auditions for the school musical: a modern pop update of . . . Pygmalion.

The unpopular/popular romance was a teen-movie staple long before He's All That, and The DUFF continues the tradition with a self-aware twist. Bianca is horrified to discover that she's been designated the "DUFF" of her friend group: the one who is less popular and is seen as a way to get close to the actual popular friends. As she tries to shake this image, she strikes a deal with her childhood pal (and current football star) Wesley: she'll tutor him to pass a class if he'll help her with an anti-DUFF makeover.

A tangled web of lies and half-truths is at the heart of He's All That, and deception drives the conflict for Sierra Burgess, too. Instead of being based on Pygmalion, this flick is based on Cyrano de Bergerac. After a popular cheerleader tries to brush off a guy by giving him Sierra's number instead, Sierra starts texting him — and keeps going even after she realizes he believes he's texting her classmate, not her.

We can't talk about high school rom-coms without talking about To All the Boys and its sequels. Here, as with He's All That, a popular student (the charming Peter Kavinsky) wants revenge on an ex. He teams up with shy Lara Jean, whose secret love letters have been leaked, to fake a relationship for both their benefits. As they spend more time together, though, their fake relationship starts to turn into real feelings.

He's All That is a classic "makeover" movie, and so is What a Girl Wants, but with one major difference. Instead of the "makeover" being connected to a love interest, the main relationship in What a Girl Wants is between a daughter and her estranged father. When Daphne goes to London to try to meet her father, he's surprised but happy to meet her, but Daphne quickly learns that the rules of British high society are very different than American high school.

High school hierarchy has never been more delightful than in Clueless, the '90s classic inspired by Jane Austen's Emma. Cher rules the social ladder at her elite Beverly Hills school, and when new student Tai arrives, Cher decides to take her under her wing, give her a makeover, and try to play matchmaker for her. Naturally, nothing goes according to plan!

The makeover trope is a high school comedy staple, and it doesn't get much better than having Julie Andrews as the one leading the charge. Awkward teenager Mia has her life thrown into chaos when her estranged grandmother arrives and reveals that Mia is the heir to the throne of Genovia. As Mia tries to adjust to the reality of being a princess, she still has to navigate the indignities of high school life, crushes, mean girls, and the horrors of gym class.

Troublemaker Patrick agrees to flirt with Kat so nerdy Cameron can try to woo Kat's popular sister, Bianca. The first problem: Kat does not want to be flirted with. The second: Patrick starts to fall for Kat for real.

"Be yourself" is ultimately the motto of movies like He's All That, and Dumplin' takes that theme and gives it a slight twist. To prove a point to her pageant-obsessed mom, Willowdean enters a pageant, expecting to be able to prove how messed-up and damaging pageants are. Though she does have a point, she also is surprised to find that the pageant world is a little different than she expected it to be.

Why should high school students get to have all the fun? This rom-com takes some of the same themes as He's All That — an opposites-attract romance, a secret that could blow up their relationship — and creates a charming romance for college students. Collegiate Paige is laser-focused on her medical school dreams, so she has zero patience for Eddie, a party-boy transfer student whom she's stuck with as a lab partner. Just when their relationship starts to thaw, she discovers the truth: Eddie is actually Edvard, the Danish crown prince.

She's the Man, like He's All That, takes a classic work of literature and transforms it into a modern-day madcap high school comedy. She's the Man takes its inspiration from Shakespeare's cross-dressing twin-swap Twelfth Night and centers on Viola, who secretly takes her twin brother's place at a boarding school so she can play soccer. Hijinks — and an inconvenient attraction to a teammate (a young Channing Tatum nonetheless) — ensue.
