28 Casting Ideas For the New A Wrinkle in Time Adaptation

Madeleine L'Engle's classic fantasy novel A Wrinkle in Time is getting the big-screen treatment — again! OK, technically the 2004 version is a TV movie, but still. All new actors will take the main roles, originally played by Katie Stuart, Gregory Smith, and David Dorfman. Selma's Ava DuVernay is set to direct the film, which has been scripted by Frozen's Jennifer Lee. Even if you're skeptical about the remake, you have to admit that sounds like a winning combination.

In case you're not familiar with the book, the story follows Meg Murry, a 13-year-old girl whose scientist father has gone missing. Together with her crush, Calvin O'Keefe, and her brother, Charles Wallace Murry, she attempts to find him. This is a fantasy, of course, so the group ends up being transported to another dimension, where they encounter beings like Mrs. Who, Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit, and The Man With Red Eyes. Here are 28 actors who we think could take on the main roles!

Joey King as Meg Murry

Joey King as Meg Murry

King, whose long résumé includes 2010's Ramona and Beezus and the Fargo TV series, would be a natural fit for the female protagonist.

Mackenzie Foy as Meg Murry

Mackenzie Foy as Meg Murry

Remember Foy as Renesmee from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn? She's 15 now and would be a good candidate for the mousy, awkward Meg. (They'd have to play her natural beauty down, of course.)

Amandla Stenberg as Meg Murry

Amandla Stenberg as Meg Murry

Stenberg broke onto the scene when she played Rue in 2012's The Hunger Games. At 17, she's a bit older than Meg, but she could still totally nail the role. After all, Katie Stuart played Meg in the original when she was 18 years old.

Rowan Blanchard as Meg Murry

Rowan Blanchard as Meg Murry

Girl Meets World's Blanchard might actually be too cool to play outcast Meg, but she's the perfect age.

Kara Hayward as Meg Murry

Kara Hayward as Meg Murry

Hayward first turned up in 2012's Moonrise Kingdom, and she recently appeared in the Sundance hit Manchester by the Sea. She's poised for stardom, and Meg might be the perfect role to take her there.

Quvenzhané Wallis as Meg Murry

Quvenzhané Wallis as Meg Murry

It's been four years since Wallis received critical raves for her role in Beasts of the Southern Wild, and by the time filming starts on this adaptation, she'll probably have turned 13. Sure, she's on the younger side, but should this movie turn into a series (like the books), she'll be able to grow with them.

Willow Shields as Meg Murry

Willow Shields as Meg Murry

Shields hasn't had a ton of time to explore projects outside of the Hunger Games franchise, and playing Meg might be the perfect role for her to secure herself as a leading woman.

Lennon Stella as Meg Murry

Lennon Stella as Meg Murry

Last on our short list for Meg is Nashville's Lennon Stella. The show is her only acting credit, and we're curious to see what she could do with a big role.

August Maturo as Charles Wallace Murry

August Maturo as Charles Wallace Murry

If you watch Girl Meets World, you're already familiar with little Maturo. He plays Auggie Matthews, and he would be a great fit for child prodigy Charles Wallace.

Max Charles as Charles Wallace Murry

Max Charles as Charles Wallace Murry

For a 12-year-old, Charles has an exhaustive résumé. He's voiced characters in everything from Adventure Time to Family Guy, and he's appeared in American Sniper and on the ill-fated ABC series The Neighbors. Plus, he's adorable and could totally pull off the telepathic Charles Wallace.

Miles Brown as Charles Wallace Murry

Miles Brown as Charles Wallace Murry

Brown is a constant scene-stealer on Black-ish: he clearly has the acting chops that could shine on the big screen.

Jacob Tremblay as Charles Wallace Murry

Jacob Tremblay as Charles Wallace Murry

Let's be real: Tremblay would slay this role. The 9-year-old Room star has taken award season by storm, and he could absolutely handle Charles Wallace's dense vocabulary.

Chandler Riggs as Calvin O'Keefe

Chandler Riggs as Calvin O'Keefe

Riggs should take a break from fighting zombies to play Meg's young love interest, Calvin O'Keefe. Calvin is a couple years older than Meg, and he's one of the cool kids.

Ethan Cutkosky as Calvin O'Keefe

Ethan Cutkosky as Calvin O'Keefe

Cutkosky has played Carl Gallagher on Shameless for the past five years, and he's at just the right age to play Calvin.

Nolan Gould as Calvin O'Keefe

Nolan Gould as Calvin O'Keefe

We've been watching Gould grow up before our very eyes on Modern Family, and he would be perfect to play the male lead. He even took Joey King to the Screen Actors Guild Awards this year — can you imagine if they starred opposite each other in the movie? Cuteness overload.

Cameron Monaghan as Calvin O'Keefe

Cameron Monaghan as Calvin O'Keefe

He might be too old for the part, but we can't help but think of another Shameless actor for Calvin: Cameron Monaghan. He's the only actor on our short list who has Calvin's red hair, and that's a major plus.

Maggie Smith as Mrs. Whatsit

Maggie Smith as Mrs. Whatsit

Mrs. Whatsit (originally played by Alfre Woodard) is over 2 billion years old, but appearance-wise, she's just an elderly woman wrapped in clothes. She's knowledgeable and caring, and Dame Maggie Smith would be wonderful.

Helen Mirren as Mrs. Whatsit

Helen Mirren as Mrs. Whatsit

Also a great candidate? The fabulous Dame Helen Mirren.

Judi Dench as Mrs. Whatsit

Judi Dench as Mrs. Whatsit

At this point, whoever plays Mrs. Whatsit clearly has to be a dame. Dench fits the bill!

Pam Grier as Mrs. Who

Pam Grier as Mrs. Who

Mrs. Who is slightly "plump" and wears glasses: she is highly intellectual and often quotes famous writers like Shakespeare. Grier has been in everything from The L Word to The Man With the Iron Fists since breaking out in 1974's Foxy Brown. I'd love to see her nail this role.

Kathy Bates as Mrs. Who

Kathy Bates as Mrs. Who

While Bates has become a fixture on American Horror Story and is thus kind of terrifying, she would still make a great Mrs. Who.

Miriam Margolyes as Mrs. Who

Miriam Margolyes as Mrs. Who

Finally, remember Margolyes as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter movies? How great would she be?

Meryl Streep as Mrs. Which

Meryl Streep as Mrs. Which

Mrs. Which is the leader of the Mrs. W's. She's wise and a great advocate for the children. She may be a tough one to cast, since she doesn't actually have a human form and mostly appears as a shimmering light or sometimes a stereotypical witch with a black hat. Who better to take on the role than Streep?

Jessica Lange as Mrs. Which

Jessica Lange as Mrs. Which

Then again, American Horror Story's Lange has had good practice playing a witch.

Julie Andrews as Mrs. Which

Julie Andrews as Mrs. Which

Julie Andrews, patron saint of wonderful grandmothers, would almost be too good to be true.

James Spader as The Man With Red Eyes

James Spader as The Man With Red Eyes

The Man With Red Eyes is a mysterious figure. He is the "Prime Coordinator" on the planet that the kids travel to, and he is the vessel through which IT, the brain that dominates the planet, communicates. While at first he's friendly, he turns on the children. The Blacklist's Spader is just the man to play both sides.

Christoph Waltz as The Man With Red Eyes

Christoph Waltz as The Man With Red Eyes

Spectre's Waltz would also be a good pick: he's proven that he can play nice guys (Django Unchained ) and the terribly evil (Inglourious Basterds).

David Tennant as The Man With Red Eyes

David Tennant as The Man With Red Eyes

Actually, scratch everything. If Doctor Who and Jessica Jones taught us anything, it's that Tennant needs to play this role.
