Northern Ireland = Castle Black, the Twins, and More
HBO

Northern Ireland = Castle Black, the Twins, and More

Northern Ireland is the home to many of Game of Thrones' locations and where the show's production is headquartered. It has stood in for the most iconic locations in the Seven Kingdoms, including Castle Black, the Twins, parts of the Dothraki Sea, and the Haunted Forest. Northern Ireland is very proud of this fact and provides a full location guide. Oh, and by the way — Belfast, the capital, is the place where Kit Harington was spotted when he was trying to say that he wasn't coming back to Game of Thrones last Summer.

Dubrovnik, Croatia = King's Landing
HBO

Dubrovnik, Croatia = King's Landing

The city where the king resides — right now, that's Tommen — is portrayed by Croatian city Dubrovnik, conveniently located on the Adriatic Sea. It's particularly fitting because it's also one of the 10 best medieval walled cities, so it looks perfect for one of the most important locations in Westeros. Like a lot of proud filming locations, you can book a Game of Thrones tour if you visit.

Doune Castle in Scotland = Winterfell
HBO

Doune Castle in Scotland = Winterfell

The setting of the Stark family stronghold is filmed at Doune Castle in Scotland, a real castle built in the 13th century. You may have seen it on another show too — it has also stood in for Castle Leoch on Outlander.

Iceland = Beyond the Wall
HBO

Iceland = Beyond the Wall

Several locations in Iceland, like Thingvellir National Park and Thjorsárdalur valley, are used to portray the mysterious (and freezing) world beyond the Wall, which is generally home to the White Walkers and wildlings.

Spain = Dorne
HBO

Spain = Dorne

The warm region of Dorne is filmed all over Spain, including the city of Seville, where the Alcázar Palace is used as the Water Gardens of Dorne, where Prince Doran spends his time.

Bardenas Reales, Navarra, Spain = the Dothraki Sea
HBO

Bardenas Reales, Navarra, Spain = the Dothraki Sea

Another Spanish location, the desert region of Bardenas Reales in southeast Spain, is the setting for Daenerys's journey with the Dothraki soldiers.

Osuna, Spain = the Fighting Pits of Meereen
HBO

Osuna, Spain = the Fighting Pits of Meereen

One of the most exciting sequences of season five — when Daenerys watches a battle in the fighting pits of Meereen — was also filmed in Spain, in the town of Osuna.
