This Is What Happens When You Try to Get Spoilers Out of the Mr. Robot Cast

Comic-Con is one of the best places for TV casts to directly connect with their fans, but that doesn't mean they're always game to let their audience in on what's coming up next. I was among a group of journalists who got to interview the cast of Mr. Robot during this year's convention, and they were not about to give anything away about the second season. Maybe it's because the show has seen a surge in popularity or maybe it's because they want viewers to be genuinely surprised by upcoming twists, but they're all great at keeping secrets. Here's what we did manage to eke out of the cast.

01
Portia Doubleday

Portia Doubleday

Doubleday gave us shreds of information about the future of Angela and Elliot's evolving relationship. "You see a lot in the second season, you see a lot about their relationship," she said. "You start to see the consequences of somebody that is so desperately trying to push down their guilt and shame. Her friends are against her, she is working at a company that killed her mother, and what does she do? She has to live with that every day and she actually tries to reprogram herself to survive in that environment."

02
Carly Chaikin

Carly Chaikin

Meanwhile, Chaikin hinted that episode six is the one she's the most excited about: "We're really able to dive into who Darlene is and why she's doing what she's doing and her backstory and see her in this new militant role of taking leadership and trying to control the situation."

03
Grace Gummer

Grace Gummer

Gummer's the new kid on the block, but she's just as skilled at teasing very little information. When asked about her character, Dominique "Dom" DiPierro, she said, "You're gonna see a lot. You're gonna see more of my home life and who I am privately and also at work. There are a lot of surprises and twists and turns. I think that Dom really uses her work to cover up herself and who she is. She uses it to her advantage and, in terms of this case, she'll stop at nothing to find out who did it."

04
Christian Slater

Christian Slater

Slater was the cagiest of them all. I inquired about the set pictures of a flashback on Coney Island, and this is all I got: "Sam [Esmail] was having a particularly creative moment there. It'll be interesting to see what you guys think about, I guess it's episode five."

05
Rami Malek

Rami Malek

Malek gave the wordiest answers, but there's still not a ton to read into. "It never ends up well for Elliot," he said. "We deal with the fallout quite a bit. Obviously you can already see he's conflicted and feels very guilty about what's happened with Gideon, and there's more to come for him. The special thing about the show is we don't live in this fairy-tale land where you can destroy the world's economy and everything is going to be better because of it. Sam has looked at situations all over the world, uprisings and social changes that have occurred that have left power vacuums and left governments and societies in disrepair and that's not something we shy away from. There's this big question of, 'At what cost would you like to affect society and the world you live in?', and what that will be for Elliot remains to be seen, but I doubt that it will be pleasant."

He did all but shoot down the biggest theory that's been brewing about season two: "I think things are a bit more real than people have surmounted so far."
