3 Unexpected Connections Between 13 Reasons Why and My So-Called Life

It should come as no surprise that My So-Called Life is on our list of shows to watch if you loved 13 Reasons Why. Author Jay Asher is a big fan of the '90s series, and he has said that it was "constantly in mind" while he was writing Thirteen Reasons Why. While you may have noticed at least one of these parallels, I can almost guarantee you didn't notice all of them. Take a look, and find out why we're rooting for season two.

Liberty High School

This is a small but neat detail: the schools in both My So-Called Life and 13 Reasons Why are called Liberty High School. While this doesn't mean they take place in the same universe — after all, shows like Glee, Freaks and Geeks, and The Wonder Years all take place at a fictional William McKinley High School — but it could be a nod to the '90s show.

As you've no doubt put together, the Bakers' lawyer is played by My So-Called Life star Wilson Cruz. But you may not have realized that the connection goes even deeper: Cruz's character in MSCL is Ricky Vasquez, while his character in 13 Reasons Why is Dennis Vasquez. VASQUEZ. Don't even try to tell me that's not intentional.

Robert Gant

This is my favorite connection of all time: Robert Gant, who plays Courtney Crimson's dad in 13 Reasons Why, was one half of the couple featured in The Guide to Better Loving, the tape Sharon shows Angela about sex. If you watch the episode "Pressure," you can see this scene in motion. Worth it.
