Baby-Doll Dresses Grow Up

Even if you're too old to care about back-to-school fashion, you can still affect a schoolgirl look with this fall's sophisticated baby-doll dresses. There are tons of sweet, high-waisted dresses in stores right now, all of which put tiny twists on the traditional baby-doll look. And yes, it is possible to wear one without looking like a 5-year-old: The key is chosing neutral tones and tailored, streamlined cuts that look as grown up as they do girly. Here are some picks:

Anna Sui Satin Dress, $398, available here

Embroidered Bird Puff Sleeve Dress, $180, available here

Three more looks, so

Milly Silk Empire Dress, $350, available here

Forever 21 Woven Baby Doll, $24.80, available here

Anthropologie Skylight Dress, $288, available here

they're all so gorgeous. but they're only good if you've got a flat tummy. ____________________________________ Don't tick me off. Or you'll get it.

Who knew that we needed birds on our boobs and that it would look so fabulous? Really, really cute and the price is not bad, either.

nicachica - I can't say for sure about babydolls in particular, but I know that Shoshanna designs for women with larger busts.

I like all of them except the Anna Sui, I already look a lot younger than I am, and that dress would make it look worse. I hear ya girls on the trouble with Ds it can be so frustrating. Nicachica good luck on WW, I've been doing it myself, and have lost 20 pounds.

Nam4, i'm feelin ya! I really hate shopping unless its for shoes! I can't wear spagetti straps because you would need a strapless bra with them and those things can't hold up my babies. AND i can't wear anything tube top cuz i just know my girls are gonna flp out. Seems like the only thing that look good on me are halter tops and v-necks. But halters are a bit tricky, know what i mean? ay, this body i have! on the plus side, i'm starting to go to weight watchers so hopefully i'll lose some of my top. wish me luck! i have 5-10 pounds to lose before my cousin's wedding in October and another 15 after that. :)

I love them all except the Anna Sui. Way too French-maid-in-grammer-school.

Cute dresses but I would feel and look like a baby in them. So I like them but on someone else.

I hear you, Nicachica... I've got D's as well. Shopping for dresses (hell, shopping for ANYTHING) is really difficult.

I'm liking the Anthropologie dress too. The first 2 dresses look too Lolita-esque.

You know what I like about these dresses ??? Even chubby girls can wear them because they "Hide" the big belly.

mmm, I never thought I'd hear "babydoll" in the same sentence with "sophisticated" without the words "is not" inbetween.

brave Fab! these are really excellent picks. :) i just wish i could wear these types of dresses but with their small cups and my size D's, they look ridiculous. maybe you can have a story on what kinds of dresses go well with big busts? anyone else have this problem?

A babydoll dress is one thing. A babydoll dress with a Peter Pan collar, on an adult, is a little silly to say the least.
