10 Brands That Redefined the Ad Campaign in 2013

Dec 30 2013 - 2:00pm

This year, our favorite brands devised new ways to capture our attention, blow up our social media streams, and covet their latest collection — and it was all through their ad campaigns. While DKNY [1] stopped traffic and Burberry [2] bent it like Beckham, Saint Laurent [3] tapped a masked musical duo and Prabal Gurung [4] made an Instagram star out of its Fall face — and that's just scratching the surface. An ad campaign is no longer a pretty face in a beautiful image, and these 10 brands prove just that.

Miss Dior Spring 2013

From the moment Jennifer Lawrence was named the face [6] of Miss Dior in Fall 2012, we were eager to see what the images, photographed by Willy Vanderperre, would look like. The undeniably sophisticated shots created by his vision and Jennifer Lawrence's execution left us speechless.

A netted headpiece and an oversize bow finished off this timelessly glamorous image.

Stuart Weitzman Spring 2013

Stuart Weitzman [7] tapped none other than Kate Moss [8] to star in its Spring 2013 campaign, which was photographed by fashion favorite Mario Testino.

The eagerly anticipated campaign stripped away color and featured minimalistic styling to place an emphasis on the footwear.

Burberry Spring 2013

Burberry [9] proved that there's more than one model (or even two!) in the Beckham family when it cast Romeo Beckham in its spirited Spring 2013 campaign, photographed by Mario Testino.

Saint Laurent's Music Project

The Saint Laurent [11] Music Project may have included stars like Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson, but it was the inclusion of Daft Punk [12], who wrote a 15-minute soundtrack for the Saint Laurent Spring 2013 show, that got people talking.

The campaign was just the beginning of Daft Punk's moment in fashion. The group was later spotted with Karlie Kloss [13] shooting for Vogue.

Prabal Gurung Fall 2013

Prabal Gurung [14] harnessed the power of social media [15] by slowly revealing its Fall 2013 campaign star, Bridget Hall, on Instagram.

The choice to reveal the images, shot by Daniel Jackson, on the social media platform followed a similar move by Oscar de la Renta [16] with its Fall campaign.

Louis Vuitton Fall 2013

Michelle Williams [17] proved that she's more than just a movie star — she's a style star — when she starred in the Louis Vuitton Fall campaign [18].

The softly styled images debuted two of the most talked-about bags of the season: the Louis Vuitton [20] W bag [21], pictured here, and the Capucines bag, seen in the previous image.

DKNY Fall 2013

DKNY [22] knew that in order to create a showstopping campaign, it had to literally stop traffic in Times Square.

Cara Delevingne and Curtis Kulig were photographed by Mikael Jansson for the campaign. We spotted Cara and DKNY [23] up to more Times Square antics [24] in October!

Balenciaga Fall 2013

Kristen McMenamy was photographed by Steven Klein for Alexander Wang [25]'s first Balenciaga [26] campaign. The campaign, much like Wang's first collection for the brand [27], was sleek, minimal, and monochromatic.

The campaign also revealed its headline bag [28] for the Fall, the Balenciaga [29] Le Dix.

Cole Haan Born in 1928

Cole Haan [30] celebrated its 85th birthday by coordinating a campaign featuring iconic individuals, including Maya Angelou, born in 1928 — the same year the brand was established.

David Yurman Fall 2013

Kate Upton may have been photographed on the beach plenty of times, but there was nothing Sports Illustrated about her David Yurman [31] Fall campaign — the first large fashion ad campaign she has landed.
