Designers Scale Down For The 2009 Oscars

Fab Flash: 2009 Oscars Scaled Down But Still Fabulous

This year, the Oscars present a unique challenge for designers. The current economic crisis has caused a scaling down of glitz for this Sunday's festivities. For example, swag suites will be fewer and filled with less pricier items. "If someone fabulous comes through the door they will get something, but it’s much less of anyone coming through the door and leaving with a little bag of stuff,” said president of the Diamond Information Center, Sally Morrison. Popular jewelers, such as Kwiat, have opted out of hosting an Oscar week suite this year while others, such as Verdura, plan on bringing select pieces for one-on-one stylist appointments. Jimmy Choo, who has been operating an Oscar week suite since 1999, will be opening later than usual.

The good news is that Oscar gowns are expected to be as glamorous as ever; especially since most are borrowed from designers who are vying for the ultimate PR pitch. “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with playing dress up right now,” said Jennifer Lopez. “Who wouldn’t want to wear borrowed dresses and borrowed jewelry?" True that.
