Black formalwear is classic, sure, but fickle fashion minds, always looking for something new, can be counted on to gravitate toward color (bright!), prints (bold!), or embellishments (sparkling!). That's why the pure noir looks Diane Kruger and Charlize Theron selected for the Sean Penn and Friends Help Haiti Home Gala felt so fresh and ended up grabbing our attention more than the loudest frock in the room.

Diane's elegant look was from Preen's Pre-Fall 2014 collection and had a formfitting top that contrasted beautifully against the volume of the lower half. Instead of matching her shoes to her dress, she picked bright white heels. In contrast, it was short and sexy for Charlize, who picked a velvet dress with a fold at the neckline that flashed a spot of sheer fabric. Her look was finished with Christian Louboutin Spring 2014 sandals, Harry Winston diamond earrings and bracelets, and a croc clutch.
