I like to pack as lightly as possible so I don't have to check bags and risk having them lost.

I hate to because I don't trust the airlines not to lose it but sometimes its necessary (i.e. if you're going on a long trip or overseas).

When I have short trips - usually for business I try not to check luggage. But I found a fab bag for carry-on needs (Coakley travel tote) for longer trips when I have to check a bag and bring laptop/other carry on essentials.

I packed the same size bag for a 2 week trip to Africa as I did for a 4 day trip to Florida. When my sister's boyfriend opened the trunk and saw my bag he was like "wow, I wasn't expecting that at all. How long are you hear for?"

Only if I'm going away for a week or more than a few days. Otherwise, I'd much rather just take a carry-on. I have such a paranoia of my luggage getting lost.

I always UPS it to my destination. It's quicker, easier, and doesn't cost much. I still pack in luggage so it's easier to lug around the hotel room. I just take a large purse on the plane w/me!

I avoid checking if I can possibly help it. I've gotten pretty fantastic at cramming things in just my carry-on, although it has gotten harder with the liquid rules. I often will end up mailing stuff back to myself if I go shopping or anything since I don't usually have extra room in my carry-on for that sort of thing. Still better than checking luggage! Especially after the lost luggage mess I had to deal with a couple Christmases ago.

I don't know how people manage with just a carry-on bag. I always have to check in my luggage.

NO WAY! I pretty much travel exclusively carry-on. I can go to Paris for a week with one carry-on. It's all about layering baby.

I'm so paranoid my luggage will be lost if I check it, so I always travel with just my carry-on. Then again, I haven't had to pack for more than 2 weeks or so, so I may need to do some checking in eventually.

I HATE checking luggage, but it's kind of necessary if I'm going abroad for more than 5 days. I've also struggled with how to efficiently pack more than 2 pairs of shoes in a carry-on, where one of those pairs is a pair of tennis shoes or flip flops. Tips, anyone?

I try to avoid checking my baggage at ALL costs! I have never lost it when I DID check it *thankfully* but I am so paranoid about potentially losing it that I take all measure to make sure everything I need (whether I'm going away for 3 days or 9) fits into a carry-on and my over the shoulder purse/second smaller carry on.

I didn't have to before the liquids rules... but before they were offering plastic bags at the airports, I lost $300 worth of MAC gels/liquids at the security counter. I haven't ever had my baggage lost or damaged yet... so I just check.

When I travel, it's for a swim meet, so I can't pack my fab clothes. Just sweats and stuff.

It always depends on the destination. I think if you are going somewhere tropical, there is no excuse to not pack lightly. Swim suits and sunscreen never take up a lot of room! =)

I travel light! Hubby and I went on our honeymoon with a duffel bag each, so easy!

Wow skigurl, tough boss! I try to carry on if at all possible. I have a great Swiss Army bag that converts between a rolling bag and a large backpack. It works out great. I'd go with all carry on all the time, but it doesn't always work...when I go back to Nicaragua in June, I have to take one bag with my stuff and another with medicine and such...and that one gets HEAVY!!!

oh long vacation trips, i always check at least one bag, but i went on a few 3-day business trips with my boss, and she is totally against the checking of bags, so i had to not only pack all my work clothes and shoes into a small suitcase, but i had to develop the arm strength to actually heave the thing over my head into the storage compartments over the seats...AND if i moved too slowly when lining up to get on the plane, i got yelled at because there wouldn't be room for our bags in the overhead compartments....AND when one colleague we were travelling with didnt know her rules and accidentally checked his bag on one trip, when we got to the destination she left without him in a cab to the hotel because he had to wait for his bag and she was mad.....so she's given me a whole new outlook on checked vs. carry on!

i would love to be able to only carry-on, but with the liquid rule, i just can't. but i've had my luggage arrive late sooooo many times. delta's the worst (we like to say it stands for Don't Expect Luggage To Arrive)
