I actaully wrote a paper on this for orgo lab... many fabrics contain chemcials such polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and formaldehyde, which companies use because it makes the fabric stain free, wrinkle free, flame retardant and disinfected. The only problem is that these chemicals are gases at room temperature and when found in large enough concentrations, become harmful to humans. PBDEs impair memory, learning, affect thyroid hormones, and can cause neurodevelopmental effects on unborn babies. Many of the chemicals have been found to be carcinogen, which makes it easier to understand why more and more people are developing cancer, becuase of the abundance of chemicals around us. P.S. The "new car smell" is also full of chemicals, which is why you should air our a new car or always buy used. thoroughlymodern 8 years I do sometimes now... ever since that one episode of House where the kids got sick from the pesticides on their jeans. But other than underwear I'd probably never wash anything before wearing it I think most Americans are too obsessed with germs, and like someone said earlier I've never gotten sick from wearing new clothes so I think most of you guys are paranoid. Not only that but washing new clothes is so not eco-friendly, it's a waste of water and soap. sexyeyes 8 years I just wash underwear and bathing suits... sugoionna09 8 years It really depends on where I got the piece from. A lot of stuff gets put there because it was returned to the store.
