The only reason so many younger women feel the way they do about wearing pantyhose, thigh highs or stockings is because they aren't as liberated, independent nor self-sufficent as they believe they are. It's all a rationalization on the part of women. If we were so independent as we like to believe, we wouldn't let gay clothing designers or Hollywood types regulate our clothing choices like we do. Women have been brain-washed into thinking pantyhose, thigh highs and stockings are not the "in thing to wear." I know hundreds of women that would prefer to wear either pantyhose, thigh highs or stockings, but they don't and won't because of the pressure from their female friends, gay clothing designers and Hollywood types. Women don't dress for men, they dress in a competition with all other women. Which is totally halarious and asinine. Let's face the music ladys, our legs do not look good as ghostly white. And there are few and far inbetween women who have awesome tans. Many women would prefer not to try tanning, skin cancer etc. The tanning lotions are much better but too expensive for prolonged usage, and no one knows what prolong usage will do to our skin. So, wearing nylons on our legs is much better because they keep us warmer in the winter, help our circulation and add an all over soft colored tone to our legs.

:) None of the above. Mary Quant will get credit for bringing them into style in a good way, and rightfully so for that. But the question asks who "CREATED" Pantyhose? Tights have been around for a few hundred years. Men wore them first. (for warmth/protection/etc...) When they were made more sheer they became Fashionable and obviously attractive, but still it was only the Men that wore them (or at least showed them in public). Remember the Pants that the English/French/European Gentlemen wore that ended just below the knee? (They would wear white 'tights' underneath their trousers and this would show-off their calve muscles; which for hard working Men were very defined. --- Later on in the 1900's Women started wearing dresses that did not touch the ground, hence showing some ankle (God forbid!). Their fashionable stockings became more noticed and with time, better wearing, better/finer yarns came stockings that were more sheer. This also went into the making of tights. ---WWII Nylon/Silk was not very available as it was needed for Army parachutes, so Stockings were very high in DEMAND. Men would find them in Europe and send them home as gifts to their wives or girlfriends! --- Mr. Gant and Mr. Corruthers brought forth Norlon (which was changed to "Nylon") ["Nylon" does NOT come from NY - London] which made stockings more sheer - but also the weaving technique was changed to make them more sheer. --- As skirts became shorter (and the great Mini-skirt) stocking tops were showing so the idea of very sheer (like the fine stockings) Tights should come along. (It is some what undetermined who did it 1st exactly. Some say Gant, or Corruthers or Quant, or a list of other people (I am still looking into)- Tights became so sheer that in the United States they just changed the name to Pantyhose (Panty with Hosiery). In the U.K. and Ireland they are still called Tights, or 'Silky Tights'/'Sheer Tights'). --- Some say Pantyhose were invented in the early 1960's, but films such as "Black Tights" and "Daddy Long Legs" show girls wearing Sheer Pantyhose (and these were all shot in the 1950's)- Also Playboy Magazine had Centerfold models wearing Pantyhose in the 50's. ----Post Script- If someone does not like the Feel or Fit of Pantyhose, chances are great that they are buying a 'weak' brand/style. With Pantyhose you really do get what you pay for. The upscale High Fashion European brands (Wolford, Fogal, Pretty Polly, Levante, Filodoro, SanPelligrino, Oroblu, Donna Karen, Calvin Klein, ... are highly recommended. :)

Why does she have 3 legs? Pantyhose are gross and so outdated. You only see them on mom's and old ladies.

Mary Quant's role in the whole thing was that she made mini skirts popular in the 1960s and mini skirts were worn with pantyhose or tighs. (However, she didn't create the mini skirt either. It was created by André Courrèges, a French designer.)

Neither. It was created by Allen Gant and it was introduced in 1959 by Glen Raven Mills, a company founded by Gant's father. Besides, Thierry Mugler isn't even a female designer. He's a guy. :OY:

Allen Gant Senior invented pantyhoses in 1959. But who made it what it is today might be Mary Quant.

I don't remember any of these names mentioned in Peggy Sue Got Married, which is where I learned who created them! Although I have since forgotten the name! Still, I voted for Mary as it seemed the most likely of the list.

According to Wikipedia it wasn't any of those options: "In 1959, Allen Gant Sr. of Glen Raven Mills introduced pantyhose"
