Freaky or Fabulous? Colorful Cigarettes

This Hollywood Dreams editorial in April's Flair magazine makes me want to pack up and head South to where the sun do shine. It doesn't hurt that it features one of the naturally sexiest models out there, Flavia Oliveira. I'm not endorsing smoking (I promise, Fit!), but doesn't she look way cool with those Nat Sherman rainbow cigarettes? I suppose it would have been fine to use regular white smokes, but the fact that they're pink, green, and super skinny makes it more fashiony. I know you once said smoking in editorials is not fashionable, but are colorful cigarettes freaky or fabulous?

Cigarettes and smoking are disgusting. Period. It's even more disgusting when the fashion industry is trying to promote it as some sort of a cool accessory. And sorry, painting the cigarettes colourful cotton candy colours is not going to make it any less offensive.

Why do people still condone this disgusting habit?

i don't care what colour they come in, smoking is disgusting! and i agree with many others on here that we shouldn't condone the glamorization of smoking.

I smoke & I am not proud of it. I agree that the coloring targets a younger audience. Kinda reminds me of the candy cigs they used to sell.

I say if people want to get risk cancer it is their business. We cannot all live to be 80, nor should we all. I am all about people making their own choices. If cigs in an ad make people want to smoke, then sexed up fifteen year olds in ads make people hebephiles. For the record, when I did smoke plenty of Fantasia lights in college, I scored 99% on a max fit test (and I have allergy triggered asthma!). I think heavy smokers in general have unhealthy, inactive lifestyles. While I absolutely do not advocate smoking, I think people need to allow adults to make their own decisions about anything that involves risk (ie smoking, sex, driving, extreme sports, and other lifestyle choices).

Fabsugar, DO NOT EVER REFER TO SMOKING AS FABULOUS! Cigarettes are highly addictive, and cause a myriad of health problems. They are bad news, and you should never ever talk about them in a positive light. What you just did was send a message to all of your readers that smoking is hip, it's cool, and it's fabulous, when it is none of the above. Awful.

seems like the colour thing is marketed toward like kids. i saw it and iwa sliek ooh pink:) just cuz i love pink. but like. it makes it look kinda.. harmless pink. you know. like kids will think its okay just because its a pretty colour. so, for the ads sake, it does look better. but for like.. actually using this ad.. anywhere. ew. this probably made no sense but. wahteveR:)

I HATE PEOPLE THAT SAY 'STOP GLAMORIZING SMOKING.' I SMOKE. I DON'T DRINK, AND YET I DON'T GO AROUND TELLING PEOPLE AT BARS THAT THEY'RE GROSS BECAUSE THEY DRINK OR REMIND THEM THAT IT KILLS, CAUSE ALCOHOL DOES. DRINKING AND DRIVING, LIVER AND KIDNEY PROBLEMS LATER IN LIFE, AND ALCOHOL POISONING. ALCOHOLISM ALSO RUINS LIVES EVERYDAY. SO UNLESS YOU ARE A PRIEST OR A NUN, PLEASE REFRAIN FROM TELLING PEOPLE WHAT "SINFUL" PASS-TIME THEY CAN AND CAN'T PARTAKE IN.

Freaky and Gross. Just another way of trying to get girls to pick up a disgusting habit.

Right, as long as the fashion media is making girls and women think they need to be tall and starvation-skinny, it might as well encourage them to smoke as well. I don't care what colors they are, I don't care if the cigarettes can do a song and dance on their own. Leave cigarette glamorizing to the tobacco companies and let's showcase fashion that is healthy, flattering and attainable.

cigarette marketing wouldnt work if people wouldn't believe in advertising so much. glamorizing cigarettes shouldnt make little girls whose parents have informed them of the dangers of cigarette smoking want to go out and smoke because they see it in a photo. i doubt the photographer who took this picture works for a cigarette company. it's creative license. i dig them

Whats next? Hey teens?!? you can take this pill to tan your baby in utero, who wants pale pink skin when you can have a bronze baby! Just as ridiculous as colored cigs, and any adult who buys them ....needs to grow up.

Greentea1203 i just read ur post!! i too used to smoke socially and only cloves cuz they smelled good and looked cool djarum to be specific lol! but then i found out these we worse than regular cigarettes

Oh come on people smoking is very much tied to the jet set euro translantic hopping lifestyle which is indeed glamourous...the colors add to to the fashiony aspect..i personally do not smoke keep the vices down to sun and partying figure it helps to boot one vice :) but 90% of my friends do and you know what it is disgusting and the effects are horrendous but we cannot deny that smoking is linked to glamour yet i think its even cooler not to smoke makes u stand out from the rest

everyone knows the dangers of smoking...many children don't. And I believe there is actually fact-based studies that found that things like colors, flavors and ANIMATED spokespersons do attract children. So while Nat Sherman was probably leaning more towards the female market, no doubt children were enticed as well.
Greentea1203 Greentea1203 7 years
Who cares! If you smoke, smoke. If you don't. don't. I hate when people think things like colorful or flavored cigarettes are made to attract kids. Adults like flavors and colorful things, too!! We're not boring people! I don't smoke personally, but seriously, everyone knows the dangers of smoking--we have for DECADES. But if I did smoke, I'd be all about these. I used to socially smoke, and when I did, I smoked clove cigarettes because they smelled good and they were black, too, which was fancy. :P On another note, what's with that model in the yellow jacket's thigh? It's thinner than her calf. WTF?

i hate smoking but i got to admit these colored ciggies look nicer, and they have gold tips, i know cos i have seen these before at the duty free section at the airport.

Hey folks, cigarettes KILL, they actually KILL. The fashion industry needs to get out of bed with Big Tobacco. Amputated limbs and cancer are not sexy. Stop shoving this crap down our throats. Colored cigs are not for adults, they're colored like that to hook children, especially young girls.
