Helmut Lang Archives Shredded for Art

Helmut Lang Shredded the Remaining Pieces From His Clothing Archives For Art

If you weren't convinced that Helmut Lang is over fashion, here's a new batch of evidence: The former designer, who in the past has donated thousands of items from his archive to museums worldwide, shredded his 6,000 remaining archival pieces to use in a series of sculptures. The floor-to-ceiling, stalactitelike columnar forms — made of scraps of fabrics, fur, feathers, leather, plastic, hair and metal from more than 25 years of fashion collections — are set to go on display from July 22 through Aug. 8 at The Fireplace Project, a gallery in East Hampton, New York. According to Neville Wakefield, who is presenting the solo exhibition, the sculptures erase the past and highlight “the transience of our creative endeavors.” [WWD]
