>> Taiwanese-born designer Jason Wu has gotten a lot of attention in the past week — in large part thanks to Michelle Obama's choice of his gown for the inaugural festivities — but it sounds like the attention may have have brought out details Wu would have rather kept private. According to an "in-the-know fashion industry source," the New York Times profile of the designer published over the weekend may have outed Wu to his extended family.
The article describes Wu celebrating the inauguration at his apartment with pizza and his boyfriend, Gustavo Rangel, who manages the designer's finances; another day, Rangel is documented as coming by to take Jason to a celebratory dinner. Apparently, Wu's parents knew that he was gay, but his extended family did not, causing some awkward conversations and leaving his parents "disappointed" their son couldn't have been more "discreet."
Unfortunate that such a time of excitement for the designer would be tempered by what sounds to be an uncomfortable situation, not least because Wu founded his label two years ago with money from his family.
