The Real Reason Jennifer Lawrence's Oscars Dress Looked Familiar

Feb 29 2016 - 11:35am

Perhaps you saw Jennifer Lawrence's Dior dress [1] at Sunday's Academy Awards in Los Angeles and thought, "Boy, that looks familiar." Well, many an eagle-eyed style-watcher on Twitter noted similarities between Jennifer's 2016 gown and the Alexander McQueen gown that Gwyneth Paltrow [2] wore to the 2002 show.

The looks do have quite a bit in common, from the semisheer tops to the embellished black skirts with trains. The styling, though, was quite different. Whereas Gwyneth wore her hair up in an intricate braided bun, Jennifer left her bob straight with a simple, shiny blowout.

And it's worth noting that, among the many dresses she's worn to the Academy Awards, Gwyneth's 2002 look was not her favorite. In a piece on her Goop [3] website, Gwyneth reflected on the dress. "There were a few issues," she said. "I still love the dress itself but I should have worn a bra and I should have just had simple beachy hair and less makeup. Then, it would have worked as I wanted it to — a little bit of punk at the Oscars."

It's not yet known how Jennifer feels about her 2016 pick in relation to her many other Dior Academy Awards dresses [4]. She did, though, bring a little bit of her own Oscars punk to the Vanity Fair afterparty in a custom Alexander Wang ensemble [5].
