Kate Winslet Upset Over Posing on Real Fur In Vanity Fair Magazine

Can You Tell the Difference Between Real and Faux Fur?

I can. But, according to sources, Kate Winslet, an anti-fur advocate, didn't feel the difference when posing au naturel for Vanity Fair. Pre-photo shoot, the magazine told Winslet the blanket was faux. In reality she was posing on a $14,677 silver fox Frette fur throw. Vanity Fair has apologized to the actress for the major mix-up. But we're wondering: Would you be able to tell the difference between real and faux?

I inherited 3 minks, 2 rabbit, 4 leather and 2 lambs wool coats from my mother and grandmother. I could tell whether or not some of them were real or fake. But some I had to bring to a furrier for an expert opinion. She was able to tell me most of them but 2 she wasn't sure about. So, definitely YES, you cannot tell the difference...not even an expert!!!

i'm russian so yes yes yes :) i always know when it's real or not.

well if she's anti fur, it could mean that she wouldn't even want to go near real fur to actually know how to differentiate the two isn't it? Plus she was given the impression by a well-reputed magazine that it was faux fur, i wouldn't blame her for being ignorant one bit =\

personally i can tell the difference but really how lame of vanity fair. I am not anti fur but if someone is they should at least have the decency to respect that persons opinion and view. Its a great cause its just not my personal taste.

I can tell especially if i touch it... my mom owns a whole room full of fur coats and stoles.. it makes me sad to think of the animals, but it's not like I don't eat meat and wear leather boots... so I learn not to be so hypocritical

No, and that's why I avoid fur at all costs.

it has a distinct smell. you can tell right away. they must have airbrushed her sense of smell away.

I can tell the difference, but I wouldn't expect most people to be able to, especially in a case like this. I would have trusted their word, especially because if anyone could find fake fur that was very close to real it would be a fashion magazine. I wouldn't see any reason for them to lie, but obviously that would be very naive...

I have no idea if I would know or not, but that sucks for Kate. And I agree, foxie--why should Kate have any reason to doubt what VF told her?

There are some great faux furs out there these days, but none of them feel real. While she should have known better, the magazine shouldn't have tried to pull the wool over her eyes. I think it makes them look bad, not her.

If I were Kate Winslet I'd make this picture my chrismas card, my facebook profile pic AND hang it over my fireplace. She looks HOT. But yeah, I can totally tell real fur from fake in a sec. Not everyone can though.

Mix-up? Yeah, right. Vanity fair duped her. Hellooo

I'm not really anti fur per se because i don't like to believe propaganda. However, real fur kind of makes me recoil. It's so very soft and luxurious but I'd rather have a pet bunny.

I'm truly glad that so many of you have an anti-fur stance. If you care about animals at all, then their dead pelts really should repulse you. I always feel disgusted when I see celebs wearing fur. There's nothing glamorous or attractive about cruelty (can someone please explain this to MK & Ashley Olsen!). Poor Kate. I'm sure she never intended to pose with real fur. Shame on Vanity Fair!

No longer classy in my eyes.

I agree with Eva. Poor Kate... I wouldn't be able to tell either (I can't even remember if I've ever seen/touched a real fur coat). VF's looking pretty shady...

i wonder if kate will ever do VF again with all the controversy...

I never want to be able to tell them apart. Fur and fake fur = gross.

I'd just like to say to all of you who think she should have known that it was fake that we know she either ASKED if it was real or was TOLD that it wasn't real. What more do you expect? I'm sure she figured she'd be able to trust their word.

This photo shoot seems like it's been a real pain for her! Too bad because it's so beautiful. I once saw a coat that I thought was so pretty and my mom ended up buying it for me as a surprise. When I put it on there was a PETA card in the pocket. I felt so awful. Now a days I tend to agree with 'eveday' in that fake glamourizes the real.

That was awful...and it reminded me of what designers and magazines used to with a Brazilian model (Fernanda Tavares) -- she cried during an interview where mentioned how sad and disgusted she was when she realized that what she was wearing was real fur. I hate both, real and faux -- the first is a really cruel thing and the second glamourizes the previous one.

That's such a sexy picture! It would have been just as sexy without the fur though. I think Kate Winslet would look sexy draped in polyester!
