Lady Gaga is the star of V Magazine's September issue — but with this issue, there isn't just one cover; there are four. On each of the covers, which were photographed by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, the performer wears a custom outfit created by one of four designers, with wildly different styling. In the magazine, Gaga tells artist Marina Abramovic that each one represents a different stage of her life and career.
"That was the time in my life when I was the new artist," she said of a cover featuring a sequined jacket by Saint Laurent's Hedi Slimane, for which she sports dark, wet hair. "I wasn't a fully formed artist; I was 19, I was young. . . . And that's really what these covers are about. It's not just the hair; it's the whole life."
Take a look at all four covers, and a few shots from inside the magazine — some of them not-so safe for work — here in the gallery.
