Marc Jacobs Tattoos in New York Magazine

Marc Jacobs's Tattoo Artist Covers Lake Bell in Fake Ink For New York Magazine

"It all started with my Bull Terriers," Marc Jacobs said of his many tattoos (he's up to 33 at this point) in a New York Magazine story about how tattoos have infiltrated not only fashion, but also popular culture at large.

To accompany this story — featured in the magazine's Fall fashion issue — there's a generous collection of photographs featuring a shirtless Jacobs with close-ups on some of his tattoos: the word shameless over his heart, the red M&M, and the Muscle Man Marc doll inspired by an episode of South Park are all spotlighted. Writer Amy Larocca, who interviewed Jacobs, posits that Jacobs jumped ahead of the curve when he started getting his tattoos.

And to reflect how popular getting inked is today, Jacobs's tattoo artist Scott Campbell covered his wife, actress Lake Bell, in a giant and rather strategically placed fake rose tattoo for the cover of this issue. Bell, who doesn't have any real ink of her own, says these decorations are so common that "In a way, I think I am more novel in my absence of tattoos."

The tattooed version of Bell looks beautiful on the cover, but the image — due to her nudity in it — might not be safe for work. If you're in a safe place, then you can take a look at New York's Fall fashion issue cover here.
