Michelle Obama in Yellow Isabel Toledo at the 2009 Presidential Inauguration

First Lady Style: Michelle Obama in Isabel Toledo

Yellow. Lemongrass, to be exact. It's a known fact that yellow is an uplifting, optimistic color. What better choice, then, for the new first lady for the swearing-in ceremony this morning. While her tots wore colorful J.Crew Crewcuts (so cute), Michelle continued the delight in a custom Isabel Toledo coat and dress. The Cuban-born designer did not know this would be Michelle's choice today — imagine the designer's delight. The delicious design was quite luxurious, made of Swiss wool lace, backed with netting for warmth, and lined in pale pink French silk. About the cheery color, “I wanted to pick a very optimistic color, that had sunshine,” Toledo said. Michelle didn't stop the color there. Her olive green leather gloves and teal Jimmy Choo shoes were unexpected additions. I know everyone is comparing Michelle to Jackie O, but Jackie would definitely approve of this. What I adore most about Michelle's look is the texture, the slight overall sparkle, and fancy neckline. Not in a long while has a first lady experimented with color, texture, and embellishments.

The color was fabulous - the rest tacky glitter, too mother of the bride - found the flapping bow and coat to be frivolous and distracting

I think she looked beautiful. Not sure I like the shoes though.

I love it. The colour is great on her and the shape and texture says "warmth" which, really, that's what it should do. I liked the gloves and the shoes and the way the went with the yellow. I really like this dress.

it made her look frumpy and did not flatter her figure at all.

It's not my personal style but you know she is the first lady now and middle aged so she does have to wear things that are appropriate for that lifestyle

When she walked outdoors, it appeared that she had more bulk than usual under her dress. Granted, it is cold and she had the coat on for warmth, but I suspect she wore a bullet proof vest. If she wore something safe, we would all be complaining it is boring and safe. She looked lovely. I do wish she would wear anything but those low heels. I find them hard to walk in (harder than high heels!) and she seems to lumber a bit in them, as well.

I wish the coat was a bit more fitted around the waist. I think she would have looked fabulous if there was a belt or something to define her shape. I do applaud her for taking a chance and agree with the designer that she is using different shapes and textures which is nice. The green gloves and shoes were a pleasant surprise.

I don't like it, it reminds me of those dresses Maria makes for the kids out of drapes in "The Sound of Music". Lol! And the color is all wrong, it's like...mustard yellow. Never flattering. I think Michelle wouldva looked better in something brighter. But I hear Barack and Michelle were both wearing bulletproof vests all even so I imagine the dress choices were kinda limited.

Yellow is a hard color because it looks so different depending on lighting. Remember Michelle Williams' yellow Oscar dress? In some photos amazing, and in others she looked like Big Bird. I think this would have been a little better if the dress were slightly lighter colored than the jacket, but overall I really liked it.

oh my gosh, it looks great on her and is definitely an improvement over past first ladies... i don't understand why anyone hates it, she looked good plus her options were probably very limited since it was 20 degrees outside

she looks fab...i dunno about a new Jackie O, but she is very modern and classy and well-put together, no matter what she wears. she just looks happy and confident, so she can pull off just about anything.i think you would have to have a darker skin color to pull off a yellowy-greenish color like this though....i'm imagining it on me and ick..i am waaay to pale!

In still images, the dress shape looks a little odd (while I love the color). But I first saw this dress in a clip when she and Obama emerged from the limo — and in motion, on her tall, elegant frame, I thought she looked stunning. Very chic.

I didn't like this ensemble either. I liked her white gown more.

Um, not so crazy about her color choice or the texture of the fabric. I could have gone along with it but the gloves? Yikes.

Considering some the gorgeous choices she was given I hate it. While the color is nice and cheerful I felt that the dress made her look a bit frumpy. I really dislike the olive accessories it clashes and not in a good way.
