Satchels are one of our favorite handbag styles — they're versatile, stylish, and instantly add a menswear touch to any look. Fun fact: satchels were popularized in the 17th century and even predated the backpack! Suffice to say, this trend isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so with that in mind, we've rounded up five fabulous satchels that you need to get your hands on. From classic to studded, we've got you covered. On Allison McNamara: H&M top and necklace.View Transcript »
Hi, Allison McNamara here, and you're watching FabSugar TV. Today I'm going to show you five different satchels that will add the perfect dose of schoolboy cool to your look. One of our favorite handbag styles for a while now has been the satchel. It's worn cross body, has a front flap closure and was used for carrying books. In fact in the 17th century it became popular and it even predates the backpack. The first bag we have is this black version by Diane von Furstenberg called the Harper Connect bag. It was actually shown on the runway. The thing that drew us to this particular piece was all the different textures. The front flap is made out of leather, then the patent leather trim around the edge, and the suede on bottom. The Harper bag is known for their statement hardware, so this bold flap is really easy to open and close, and just really makes a statement, and it has a chain strap shoulder bag, if you want to wear it over the shoulder, but if you really want to achieve that satchel look, it's got this large detachable strap, so it wraps right around the hip, and it has this little smaller strap if you want to wear it over the elbow. Another thing that's detachable isfringe , but personally I love it so I wouldn't want to take it off, but if you want to you can. On the inside, there's a really neat feature: This iPad holder that's custom-sized so it fits your iPad, so you just slip it in there, protect it all day long, and it's got this bigger open area to hold all your stuff. Next we have the smaller version of 3.1 Phillip Lim's It bag called the Pashli. We have it in this fiery red hue because it definitely makes a statement, and it's really good for going out. It has this long strap that's detachable, so if you want to wear it cross-body, you can; or, if you just want to wear it with these little handles, you can do that as well. It also has this nice little buckle that holds the handles together, which is a fun little add-on. In front the Pashli is known for detailing the zippers in front, so if you open it up, it actually widens the bag so you can fit more stuff inside. On the inside, if you open up the flap here, it's got a little zipper to hold all your important stuff, and really pretty satin lining. Next up we have this structured and nude patent leather bag from Nastia.com by a brand called Melie Bianco. It has a very ladylike vibe with this handle on top and its long strap right here. One thing I like about this bag is that the strap is actually adjustable with this buckle so if you're petite like me you can actually tailor it to be the right size. Because a lot of satchels on me are a little bit longer; so this I can really make to hit right at my hip. Also it's got this front flap closure like all satchels but a really pretty brushed gold closure to add a very elegant, ladylike feel of the whole bag. Also these two little pockets in front with these buckled closures. I'm not sure if I'd actually put anything inside them, because I like to keep everything inside the main part of my bag, but I think it adds nice detail to the front. And inside it's got this really cute polka dot lining that's just girly and feminine, and lots of different side compartments to hold all your things. This coral bag is from ModCloth and we like how the studs give the whole bag a really edgy feel. It'll definitely toughen up all of your basic outfits. And this bag is really small so it's another good going out bag, again with an adjustable strap if you're petite, and it's got these two buckles in front which add intrigue to the design. When you open it up, with the snap closures, which are always nice. It's got a cute polka dot lining, same as the last bag, and a little zipper as well to throw in your credit card and those items that you don't want to lose. And last, we have this classic satchel handbag by Kate Spade in a shade called oyster. I like how it's light gray, won't get quite as dirty as an off white or as a cream, but it's just as versatile. On the front flap it has a zip closure and when you open it, it actually turns into another secret compartment so you can put lots of stuff in there, and zip it up so you don't have to worry about it falling out. And to top it off 14-karat gold plated hardware. I don't know about you, but I want all of these. So go get your hands on a satchel, right now. I'm Allison McNamara. See you next time on FabSugar TV .
