One of Michelle Obama's Favorite Designers Dishes on How She Chose Her Most Iconic Dresses

On Our Radar: Lela Rose Bridesmaids

Funny. I just finished an extensive search helping my best friend find her — my — bridesmaid dresses. She put me in charge because, well, you know why. We just found them! We're going with J.Crew's silk taffeta cocktail dresses, but had timing been different, I may have suggested Lela Rose. The American designer of super femme, city-savvy clothes is delving into the bridesmaid market. Nary a pastel or petticoat in sight, Lela's dresses will come in jewel tone hues and modern silhouettes. One example is a crinkle chiffon dress with rosette details inspired by the First Daughter’s bridesmaids’ dresses. Shorter dresses will be $300 and the maximum will be $450 for full-length gowns. Also, Rose will continue her partnership with Payless and launch "The Unforgettable Moments by Lela Rose" dyeable shoe collection in December.

I went with J.Crew for my bridesmaids and they fit a variety of body types really well, all of them looked flattered and beautiful.

"Nary a pastel or petticoat in sight" Isn't that what the article says? And what color dress is the model wearing? LOL

that's reasonable actually. i am getting married in a few months and i haven't even started to think about bridesmaid dresses. i don't know if i'm even going to have them, but it's nice to know that have options for what they will wear if i do choose to have a few.

Suzi,I'm having the same issue. I think it depends on the formality of your gown. If your gown is a lighter fabric (chiffon) with a sweep or a semi-chapel length train, you'll be fine with tea lengths. However, if you end up with a satin or lace gown and a chapel or longer train, it would probably look more balanced to have them in longer dresses. The BM dresses that I originally picked out were chiffon tea length, perfect for an early evening wedding in July. However the gown that I like the best so far is satin trimmed with lace with a chapel train. I think it ups the formality and requires my 'maids to be in floor-length dresses. So now my mom and I are on the hunt for dresses similar to the ones I had picked out, but more formal just in case I end up with the formal dress.Ultimately, it's up to your style. Just go with whatever feels right to you and meets your own personal style.

My maids' dresses were $60 from Chadwicks.com and could be worn again for other fancy events - they don't scream "bridesmaid dress" They have some beautiful dresses under $200.

suzi, do what you like, what they like, and what feels right. With it being a non-church wedding, you have more leeway even with the manner-y sorts, but I say go for what you find beautiful!

$300? Yikes, that's way too much for me to ask my bridesmaids to spend. On a similar subject, what's the rules on having the bridesmaids wear tea-length gowns? I'm having an evening wedding and I'm wearing a floor-length gown, and I've heard that means my maids have to wear floor-length gowns as well. Is that true? I prefer tea length, and the ceremony will be outside on a patio overlooking a lake, which makes me think it might work, because it won't be a super formal church affair. Any advice?

The dresses look lovely, but I couldn't have asked my girls to spend $300/$400 on a dress...that's way too much money.

beautiful...I had my bridesmaids dresses custom made by the woman that designed all of my ballet costumes as a child (she also made my wedding gown).

There are a lot of pretty bridesmaid dress companies - Thread is another beautiful, pricey company. I just couldn't ask my bridesmaids to fork out that much money. We used Ann Taylor Celebrations and I found coupon codes so they all paid less than $150.

$300 is more than I would hope to pay.

Very pretty! Though, I wouldn't have expected my bridesmaids to shell out that much cash. The onces I chose were from J.Crew as well -- the price was right and they were pretty :]
