Paris Fashion Week: Jean Paul Gaultier

With his over-the-top runway shows and cutting-edge couture, Jean Paul Gaultier never fails to shock or entertain us. For his Spring 2007 show at Paris Fashion Week, the big news was that Gaultier laughed in the face of all the skinny-model controversy by using a plus-sized model in his show.

But that was just the beginning. The Paris show also featured a 30-year retrospective of Gaultier's eclectic couture and ready-to-wear looks, including the infamous pointy cone bra and other wacky creations. For his latest designs, Gaultier played it relatively safe, with brightly colored street wear and warm-up inspired styles. To see the retrospective and the new looks,

The point of fashion for plus-sized girls is to show that they can look beautiful and chic too, not to make them laughingstocks. Additionally, I adore the idea of using plus-size models, but plus-size in no way means "unhealthy" and that's not the vibe it should be giving off. And this...is definitely "unhealthy".

I don't even think he was trying to make a statement in a "positive" way, but instead making a snarky comment about the new restrictions on model sizes. Sort of "well I can't send skinny girls down the runway - is this what you want instead?" I just cant believe that this model agreed to do it.

Awww, i feel bad for her. Well, she agreed to do it.

The clothes aren't even flattering on the plus-size model - quite the contrary. I know girls that are size eight, size twelve, and wear cute and fashionable clothes that FLATTER their size. They don't buy size sixes and try to pretend they're thin. They dress for their size. This is just ickity.

I agree with demonkitty18. The designer uses all skinny models and then one plump model; not women of many different sizes. Oh, and to those of you who assume she's unhealthy because of her size - never assume.

IS she honestly proud of herself, i saw the interview and she was actually happy WTF is wrong with her!!!!

she was obviously just a publicity stunt, if he really wanted to make a statement he should have used models of different sizes- fat n thin just to show respect for all sizes etc. This just looks like another oppurtunity for people to poke fun at a fat girl.

I don't like the clothes.

Fat model is plain wrong. If there were no more thin models, what would be left for us to aspire to? But controversy sells, so he got what he wanted alright.

Those are all some of the ugliest clothes I have ever seen, and that woman in the black.....I don't care how many obese women get p oed at me, that's just gross to look at half naked., and very unhealthy!!! They should have models sizes 3 up to 12., since that's the normal size of women, at least the ones I see everyday! The size 1 chicks who are 5'10 are grossly unhealthy, as is the size 20 something whatever that woman is, 5'5......also grossly unhealthy and both heart attacks waiting to happen!

okay, now this is just ANNOYING. That woman is just plain unhealthy and overweight...such fucking double standards. Nothing is going to change if we just flip the standards, there will still be those who are naturally UNcurvy who feel they are not good enough. Too fat and too skinny are BOTH unhealthy. Seriously, I'm pissed. Such an annoying way to make a ridiculous statement...way to f*cking go...

How about splitting the difference and having normal size women in their shows.

From one extreme to another. *sighs* At least JPG had a lot of PR letting that Lady on the catwalk. It even made it to the German main news today.
