Not even the worst Winter storm of the year could keep invitees from claiming their seats at the Ralph Lauren show and with good reason. The designer rewarded those who trekked through nearly a half of a foot of still-falling snow with the unveiling of his brand-new Polo collection for women. And unlike designers who present offshoot lines in a separate show, Lauren opted to send them down the same runway. "I love the contrast of Polo's cool eclectic spirit with the luxury and modern glamour of Collection," he said in the show's notes.
And that contrast was evident. With Polo, we saw buffalo-plaid quilted jackets atop fair-isle sweaters and an all-around rugged aesthetic, with Aztec prints, fringe leather bags, and chunky wool socks under platform sandals. Conversely, Ralph Lauren Collection brought the big sartorial guns with cashmere, suede, and fur. Some of the most striking looks were those in head-to-toe monochrome — like Karlie Kloss's all-cream look up to her beret and down to her high-top sneakers. And, for those trend casting, it doesn't seem that pale pink is going anywhere, and when it comes to menswear, pinstripes are making a big comeback.
When both shows took their final walks, Ralph Lauren took his bow — with a standing ovation from his family in the front row — in his classic all-black uniform and a killer pair of combat boots. Like his Fall 2014 lineup, the perfect balance of an upbeat attitude with timeless style.
