Style Icon: Edie Sedgwick

A 1965 fashion spread in Life magazine dubbed her "the girl with the black tights," and Edie Sedgwick wore them with everything, from dressy shift dresses to long t-shirts. So with mod styles and black tights so ubiquitous this fall—not to mention an upcoming biopic called "Factory Girl" starring Sienna Miller as Edie—it seems fitting that the socialite/actress/Factory regular should kick off Fabsugar's new Style Icons feature, where we'll spotlight past and present fashion plates and tell you how to get each one's signature look.

With her cropped platinum hair and dark-lined eyes, Edie Sedgwick defined effortless but edgy mod glamour. The key is pairing simple sheath dresses with bold jewelry, solid-color tights, and basic pumps or flats. Here are the five essential elements you need to get the look.

Abaete Mod Mini Dress, $295, available here.

Edward An Boatneck Dress in Black, $154, available here.

I was born in 1965 when this CLASSIC PHOTO of the Late Edie Sedgwick ( 1943 - 1971 ) R.I.P. was in my parents Life Magazine at the time. Edie was the Girl with the Black Tights and 44 Years later, I still LOVE and wear my Black Tights every day with a PASSION because I feel comfortable wearin' them and my collection says it all. The Life Magazine was dated November 26, 1965. I am proud to still have the COLLECTABLE 4 LIFE!!!! YIPPEE!!!!!!

The reason many women are afraid, embarrassed and angry at the comeback of stirrup leggings is because they probably wore them in their younger days, and now they no loger have the body they used to. However, there are still many women out there, from their teens to their 40's who still look damn good and sexy in them. Just becuase you weigh 500lbs there is no reason to spoil the fun for everyone else. Another thing: It is (sadly) very true and regretful that spandex, cotton and nylon leggings, with or without stirrups were made in XXXL sizes due to the greed of garment manufacturers. Then you began to see trailer trash and fat ghetto women and fat men, gay and stright, wearing them turning a sexy fashion into a joke/ It is understandable, and yes, the sight of those was enough to make your eyes bleed, but look at it this way: Right now, stirrup leggings are only available through high class outlets, and in slim sizes. Let's hope it remains that way and that they (garment makers) do not kill the goose that lays the golden egg. Peace!

I love Edie. When I was a teen, I had a copy of Jean Stein's biography and read it from cover to cover. I wanted to run away from home and live in the city.

The first dress is HOTT!! I'd definitely work it. Black tights are an asset to my everyday business casual.

that picture is so freakin cool! but i guess any pic with Andy Warhol in it is bound to have some flair. ;) i can't pull off the mod look but i definately admire girls that look good in those outfits. i prefer more rock/punk styles myself but always envy other cool styles. :)

I really hope mod styles pass quickly because boxy dresses are just so unflattering. Example: Check out Jessica Simpson on The View.
