Style For Style: Protect Your Traveling Shoes

Urban Outfitters at ShopStyle

When you travel, so do your shoes. Duh. Many use shoe bags to protect their footwear but for those who don't, there's another solution. It's highly important to cover your shoes because the dirt they carry from the streets can rub off and ruin the clothes in your luggage. Not to mention wear and tear on your shoes.

If you're following my fashion recession guide and trying to save money, allow me to help you protect your shoes — like this Urban Outfitters Leather Bow Bootie ($98) — without spending anything.

Ladies, you're looking at a Plastic Shower Cap ($2) — stuff your footwear in them! Next time you're at a hotel, take the complimentary shower caps and use them to cover your shoes before stuffing your luggage. They're easier on the wallet and get the job done just as well. Use this tip in emergency situations or to completely replace shoes bags with shower caps. Your call.

I use ziploc bags, too. They're cheap and there's no way any dirt can get out of the bag unless the bag breaks, and they don't break that easily. There are even those crazy big ziploc bags now, for those who need bags for knee high boots. I love those things, they're tougher in addition to bigger, though they do cost more than the regular old ziploc bags.

I have so many of these laying around my house (my husband's uncle distributes that stuff to hotels) and I never thought to use them for this purpose! I usually just use them to cover bowls and stuff, but I'm totally stealing this idea.
