Tributes For Alexander McQueen 2010-02-11 09:24:16

Tributes Pour in For Alexander McQueen

Earlier today I broke the sad news that fashion had lost one of its best loved names. Alexander McQueen has apparantly committed suicide at his home, and while more details emerge, tributes have been appearing on Twitter.

The British designer was born Lee Alexander McQueen in East London and began his fashion career on Saville Row. He later completed an MA at Central Saint Martins and his graduate collection was famously bought up by Isabella Blow. He won British designer of the year four times between 1996 and 2003. He was the youngest designer to ever receive that accolade.

Daisy Lowe commented, "Wow that's a huge loss for the creative world," while Brix Smith Start is "stunned" and commented, "Poor man what a loss of talent!" Dita von Teese also made a brief comment on her Twitter simply stating, "Rest in Peace Mr. McQueen". Fellow designer Rachel Roy said, "My prayers are with A. McQueen's family and loved ones — a loss for the entire world on so many levels."

His most recent collection for Spring 2010 was inspired by his love of diving. He streamed the show live on ShowStudio and also showed off his commercial awareness by including the first play of Lady Gaga's new single. The Spring line included those by now infamous armadillo shoes which did not go in to production, but have been worn by Daphne Guinness amongst others.

British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman has released a statement saying, "Lee McQueen influenced a whole generation of designers. His brilliant imagination knew no bounds as he conjured up collection after collection of extraordinary designs. His death is the hugest loss for anybody that knew him and for many that didn't."

I am shocked, He was my favorite designer, his shipwreck dress being my favorite dress ever created. His shows were original and his designs captivating. He brought so much beauty to the world. Good save McQueen. The world will miss him. I miss him.

This news of Alexander's death just so breaks my heart. I remembering hearing just about a week ago that his mother had died. And that his was so distraught and heartbroken over her death. I've been there where Alex was, where you cannot fathom your life continuing after your mom dies. Where that pain and grief are the worst thing you've ever experienced and you cannot imagine it ever improve.I wish that I could've reached out to him and let him know that even though it may not have wanted to survive his mom's death and couldn't even see his way out of that dark dark place that he could survive it. It wouldn't necessarily be easy or pleasant and the pain of losing her would not necessarily ever diminish but there's no way any mother would want her child to end their life to follow her into death. I lucked out in a way that my mom knew she was dying and that her death would happen very quickly along a predictable timeline, so she spent the last three years of her life preparing me for it. At age 9 she told me she was going to die and that it was going to hurt but that she expected me to thrive and survive after her death. Not every mom gets the chance to do that - to try to prepare their child (be they adult or child) but I am grateful she did her best.Mr McQueen will be missed and people across the board and his death is just so heartbreaking because it didn't have to be this way. i hope he found some measure of peace in his decision to join his mother.
