What Is Considered Vintage?

What Do You Consider Vintage?

I was recently on the bus, when I spotted someone wearing a sweater I owned in . . . 1997! I admit, at first I cringed, but after my face took its original form, it got me thinking: would that be considered old or vintage? Then I coincidentally came across this post written by FabSugar Community member Krystal Johnson deemed Vintage What?! She talks about a jean jacket her mother bought her during freshman year of high school, which she recently started wearing again, and which she now considers her version of vintage. So tell me, what do you consider vintage? Is it a piece that's been handed over to a few people? Is it the number of years it's been around? Share your thoughts below.

I would say vintage is 20 years as a rule of thumb. Perhaps the word has come to represent a dated style that's no longer made or hard-to-find.

Interesting debate. I remember being surprised when I read that Julia Roberts' "vintage" black and white Valentino dress she wore when she won an Oscar in 2001 was from Valentino's 1992 collection and thus only 9 years old. So I guess if her 9 year old dress was "vintage," the 13 year old sweater would be as well.

Yeah - I agree that 20 years is a good marker for considering items "vintage".

25 years, not ears!

I've always thought something had to be 25 ears old in order to consider it vintage. So something I wore in 1985 would be considered vintage. The ironic part is that when I was 15 (in 1985) I was wearing vintage clothes from the 30's and 40's.
