Ziploc Bag Beauty, Part I: Maximize Your Baggie

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably heard about the latest carry-on regulations from the Transportation Security Administration: All of the liquids in your carry-on luggage must be in bottles 3-ounces or smaller, and those must be sealed in a single quart-sized Ziploc bag. But even if you have a high-maintenance beauty regimen, it's possible to accommodate your liquids on board. The key is having a mix of liquids that go in the baggie and solids that don't. So allow me to present Ziploc Bag Beauty, Part I: Maximize Your Baggie. (Tune in later today for Part II: Save It For the Solids.)

Here are the liquid products you'll need to put inside your baggie.

  • Cleanser and Moisturizer: Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser (0.5-ounce) and Healthy Defense SPF 30 Daily Moisturizer (0.25-ounce), available as part of this $5.59 travel set here.

  • Lip Gloss: Cargo Daily Gloss, $12, 30 individual-use capsules available here.

  • To see the rest,

  • Shampoo and Conditioner: Clairol Herbal Essences Body Envy Shampoo and Conditioner , $1.29 for each 1.7-ounce bottle, available here and here.

  • Shaving Cream: Alba Botanica Moisturizing Shave Cream, $1.69 for 1.5-ounces, available here.

  • Toothpaste: Colgate MaxFresh Fluoride Toothpaste With Mini Breath Strips, $2.39 for 3 0.75-ounce tubes, available here.

  • Sunscreen: Rodan + Fields Sooth Protect SPF 15 Sunscreen, $30 for 1.7-ounces, available here.

The lip gloss capsules are very ingenious. ____________________________________ Don't tick me off. Or you'll get it.

You make a great point, quietriott. I traveled to a developing country this summer and they made me put all of my liquids from my carry-on (which were just eye drops, lip gloss, and moisturizer in the correct sizes and in a ziploc) into my luggage that I was going to check. I got lucky b/c they warned me BEFORE I checked my luggage, but had I kept them until the later security checkpoint, they would've thrown it all away, as I saw when I got there! I think it's better to pack the toiletries and cosmetics into the checked luggage at this point. There is no point wasting your energy, money, and killing your mood over this stuff on your trip!

be warned about the ziplock bag regulations -- they are going a bit overboard at times. i was at chicago o'hare and had used the same ziplock GIVEN to me buy a security officer at laguardia, and they threw everything out because the top was less than an inch longer than their "regulations." i lost not only brand new bobbi brown cosmetics (all in correct size, etc), but several hundred dollars worth of daily disposable contacts (new six month supply). not unsurprisingly, the only other cosmetics i saw in the bin were designer brands. after the fact i found out that passenger rights include being allowed to ask them to dump out/break the confiscated items. so be careful with what you pack, it sometimes isn't worth the hassle.

i've always had my liquids in a ziplock bag. i just HATE it when they spill all over my other stuff.

I'm easy. When I fly next week, the only liquids I'm bringing in my carry-on are eye drops, lip balm, moisturizer, and toothpaste. I always try to fit everything into a large purse and that's it, and the fewer beauty products I bring, the more books I can stuff in there.

I like to check out the beauty-to-go section at Sephora, dreaming of the places I want to take the cute little bottles :)
