These Iconic Movie Wedding Dresses Will Take You Way, Way Back

It's no coincidence that Hollywood's most fashionable films usually happen to have a wedding . . . and thus a wedding dress. But only a selection of those gowns have stood the test of time, and not necessarily for being gorgeous. Whether you're a bride in need of a little A-list inspiration or just a cinephile in the mood to reminisce, we've rounded up the most memorable movie wedding dresses of all time, some of which were even created by iconic designers, just for the big screen.

The Sound of Music

Maria (Julie Andrews) marries Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) in Austria's Salzburg Cathedral in a stiff, formal gown with a high collar.

The Godfather

The Godfather

Although it is a doomed marriage, the traditional Sicilian wedding of Connie Corleone (Talia Shire) to Carlo Rizzi (Gianni Russo) is a beautiful way to start the film. We think her lacy gown is timeless, and we love how she incorporates the European mantilla veil.

Mamma Mia!

Mamma Mia!

For those who dream of a seaside wedding, the film's nuptials in the Greek Isles mean that Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) can wear a flowy, tiered dress — created by costume designer Ann Roth — and a laurel headpiece. Beachy, mermaid hair and bare feet only make her look more like a Grecian goddess.

Funny Face

Funny Face

So what if Jo Stockton (Aubrey Hepburn) isn't actually a bride but just playing one for a photo shoot in Paris? This tea-length dress — designed by the actress's personal and professional couturier Hubert de Givenchy — single-handedly turned Hepburn into a fashion icon and made the silhouette a timeless bridal choice. The same goes for her kitten heels.

That's My Boy

That's My Boy

When Leighton Meester's character Jamie walks down the aisle, she looks sophisticated and feminine in a strapless design by Vera Wang.

06
Marie Antoinette
Everett Collection

Marie Antoinette

Nothing evokes the grandeur of a royal wedding like a several-foot-wide pannier skirt, bedecked in bows. Marie (Kirsten Dunst) was known for her bold fashion choices, but this may have been the pinnacle.

07
Romeo + Juliet
Everett Collection

Romeo + Juliet

In Baz Luhrmann's retelling of the classic tale, Juliet (Claire Danes) opts for a simple silk gown with covered button details and a modest neckline. Her white gloves with floral embroidery add a sweetly innocent touch, especially heart-wrenching considering the fate of the newlyweds.

Wedding Crashers
Everett Collection

Wedding Crashers

It's a good thing Jeremy (Vince Vaughn) and John (Owen Wilson) decide to crash Christina's (Jennifer Aiden) wedding, otherwise we wouldn't have laid eyes on this tulle gown so princess-like, it's worthy of a crown.

09
Bride Wars
Everett Collection

Bride Wars

What better way to show the range of a wedding designer? The at-odds best friends both wear two distinctively different dresses — Emma (Anne Hathaway) in a romantic, one-shoulder mermaid gown and Liv (Kate Hudson) in a frothy tulle ball gown — that only have one element in common. They were both created by Vera Wang.

Runaway Bride
Everett Collection

Runaway Bride

Julia Roberts wore this wedding dress as Maggie Carpenter in Runaway Bride. It was created by Ethiopian-American designer Amsale Aberra, and would be decidedly on-trend today with its off-the-shoulder detail.

11
Father of the Bride
Everett Collection

Father of the Bride

Elizabeth Taylor had her fair share of weddings, but her most famous onscreen nuptials were as Kay Dunstan in this classic film. Aspects of this opulent dress — particularly the layers of satin, the tuxedo-style front, and the lace collar — are still seen on brides today.

Father of the Bride

Father of the Bride

Almost as over-the-top as the original, the wedding dress in the 1991 version of the film also features delicate lace detailing on the bodice and all-over satin. The main difference is that George Banks (Steve Martin) custom-designs a pair of wedding sneakers for daughter Annie (Kimberly Williams-Paisley).

Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde
Everett Collection

Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde

We can't say we were surprised that Elle (Reese Witherspoon) opted to wed in her signature color, but we were relieved her Reem Acra gown was a pastel shade and not too overbearingly pink.

14
The Princess Bride
Everett Collection

The Princess Bride

Phyllis Dalton created the ornate costume for Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright), which fits the late Medieval time period and looks perfect for Renaissance fair weddings.

15
Sex and the City
Everett Collection

Sex and the City

Although Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) doesn't make it down the altar in her first attempt to marry Big, this Vivienne Westwood gown is a fairy tale. Sure, the harsh lines and teal bird headpiece aren't necessarily classic touches, but the overall look is jaw-dropping.

16
The Notebook
Everett Collection

The Notebook

While Allie (Rachel McAdams) never actually walks down the aisle in the film, she gets fitted in a vintage-inspired lace number created by costume designer Karyn Wagner.

17
Enchanted
Everett Collection

Enchanted

The perfect live-action version of a classic animated Disney princess, Giselle (Amy Adams) first shows up in the film wearing a pouffy-sleeve ball gown, complete with affixed glittery butterflies and one heck of a tiara.

18
The Wedding Planner
Everett Collection

The Wedding Planner

Although theirs isn't a match made in heaven, we love the courthouse wedding dress Mary (Jennifer Lopez) wears, from the off-the-shoulder neckline to the three-quarter sleeves to the pillbox hat with veil.

19
Steel Magnolias
Everett Collection

Steel Magnolias

A true Southern bride, Shelby (Julia Roberts) does her hair up nice and big . . . and dresses to the nines in a bow-adorned satin ball gown.

20
Coming to America
Everett Collection

Coming to America

The pink confection Lisa McDowell (Shari Headley) wears to wed Prince Akeem Joffer of Zamunda is hard to miss. The rosette alone is bigger than some brides' entire gowns.

21
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Everett Collection

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

While many of the designs in The Hunger Games were by Alexander McQueen, Katniss's wedding gown was created by Indonesian designer Tex Saverio, and it was definitely fit for a warrior bride. Needless to say, Jennifer Lawrence pulled it off flawlessly.

22
The Duchess
Everett Collection

The Duchess

The wedding of Georgiana Cavendish (Keira Knightley) and William Cavendish (Ralph Fiennes) takes place in secret to avoid throngs of onlookers, so costume designer Michael O'Connor chose a dress with the "understated simplicity of a traditional 18th century wedding." The dress, made of cream silk with a sack back that is pinned to the corset underneath, is decorated in ribbons and diamonds down the center.

23
Gone With the Wind
Everett Collection

Gone With the Wind

Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) rushes into marriage and has to wear her mother's wedding dress. To create a more realistic scene, costume designer Walter Plunkett fitted the dress on Ellen O'Hara's dress form so that the dress drooped on the young, shorter Scarlett's small frame. He also chose leg-of-mutton sleeves that were in fashion 30 years prior to this wedding.

24
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Everett Collection

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Much like the film's title, the wedding dress is anything but small. Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos) is a "frosted cupcake" on her big day. That veil, those sleeves, that choker . . . It all adds up to a lot of look.

25
The Vow
Everett Collection

The Vow

Rachel McAdams plays Paige, who marries Leo (Channing Tatum) in a short and sweet pink ensemble by costume designer Alex Kavanagh. It's a playful look all her own, and a memorable one at that.

26
The Young Victoria
Everett Collection

The Young Victoria

Thanks to the historical research done by costume designer Sandy Powell, the titular character (Emily Blunt) wears a dress based on the original gown worn at Kensington Palace, complete with ivory duchess silk satin and antique lace detail. Her accessories, also true to real life, include St. George's collar chain, an antique crystal necklace, and a sapphire paste brooch.

27
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Everett Collection

Four Weddings and a Funeral

Although the title of the film promises four weddings, we felt Carrie (Andie MacDowell) wore the showstopper dress. We haven't seen a headband-turned-veil styled so well any time since.

What Happens in Vegas
Everett Collection

What Happens in Vegas

OK, so Jack (Ashton Kutcher) and Joy's (Cameron Diaz) wedding wasn't exactly planned, but Joy accessorizes up her outfit with all the right pieces, from pearls to a garter. Her mini was designed by costume mastermind Ehrlich Kalfus.

The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement
Everett Collection

The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement

There's nothing like a royal wedding, and when Princess Mia (Anne Hathaway) walks down the aisle in a regal, lace-sleeved wedding dress created by costume designer Gary Jones, it is a true tissue-grabbing moment.

30
Frankenstein
Everett Collection

Frankenstein

It was a silent film, so the dress truly had to speak for itself. Next to the monster, Elizabeth (Mae Clarke) looks especially pious in an all-white gown with an extralong veil.
