Americans Not Eating Enough Fruit and Vegetables

How Many Servings of Fruits and Veggies Do You Eat Daily?

It seems we really are a nation who like to see meat and potatoes on our dinner plate. The CDC recently reported that American just are not eating enough fruits and veggies. Only 32.5 percent of the population eats two servings of fruit daily and that stats of eating vegetables is even worse; only 26.6 percent of Americans are eating three servings of veggies per day. And frankly, I find that alarming. The nutritional recommendations are that you eat at least five servings of fruits and veggies daily.

To put this in perspective, a 1/2-cup of fruit or raw or cooked veggies count as a serving, as does one cup of leafy greens. A quarter cup of dried fruit is considered a serving too — hello raisins!

Tell me honestly . . .

I usually eat 5+ when I'm "normal," but lately it's been about convenience (after my breakup). I voted 5+ because that's what I ate before and what I'm working back towards now :)

Since this IS a fitness and health blog, I'm fairly sure that most of us probably get our 5+ servings a day. I get probably at least 9 or 10 servings of fruits and veggies a day...I most definitely do NOT have a problem getting 'em all in.

They are a HUGE part of what I eat. Between eight and sixteen servings a day.

I eat more fruits than vegetables, though. I think that's exactly how you're not supposed to do it.

The basis of all my meals are pretty much fruit or veggie. Growing up, I used to have meat as the star but as I matured the focus shifted over to other filling foods that leave me feeling better like greens, though the past 2 weeks I have had meat which didn't make my stomach too happy :\ I always have at least one cup of fruit as a part of my lunch, green or fruit smoothies for breakfast, fruit, veggie or nuts as a snack, and then loads of veggies and beans for dinner. My favorite is steaming broccoli, brussel sprouts or cauliflower and doing a light fry while serving them beside some couscous or quiona.

these statistics are quite disappointing and sad. My husband and I had a discussion about it and we just can't see how people eat so few veggies and fruit! They're really so easy to prepare and include in meals - you can eat most veggies raw. I cant imagine a diet without these two food groups. When I don't eat enough one day I feel sluggish and crave them!

@landanimal I would expect that readers are amongst the minority--after all, we're all here because we're (at least somewhat) interested in health and fitness. I like to think we're an honest bunch :)

Depends on what you consider a fruit/veg serving. I get 4-6 but I count wine, mashed potatos, and V8. Some real apples/carrots too, but I rely on juice a lot.

Given the 54 percent of readers here say they are getting their recommended 5 servings a day, I'd guess they are lying or the readers of this site are amongst the very select minority.

Yeah, I've been making a big effort too. I just finished reading "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan. That will definitely get you eating your veggies.

I have been makign an effort to eat more vegetables (fruits yes but they are higher in sugar) and it is paying off! Green smoothies are my go-to every morning and for a fast lunch and they work amazingly!

I go through periods of eating five or more servings a day, but its just too expensive to do regularly. There are some cheap fruits and veggies out there, but I also don't want to be eating a bunch of pesticides. Conundrum.
